Krazy Kruizers Posted August 13, 2004 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2004 :) A couple of years ago, DH looked at a Windstar brochure. He looked at the itinerary and I looked at the size of the largest cabin. It looked small compared to the suites we book on HAL. That was the end of that discussion. :)
merryecho Posted August 15, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Just did Windstar and loved it. Plus side: No Dressy Nights! Dine whenever you want to,small ships (about 300 people) so no waiting for tenders, etc., first class service, can go into small ports. Minus side: rooms are all the same- a little small, so we booked a suite which is really just a double room. No balconies.
kruzkeen Posted August 15, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Two friends who cruised on WindStar last year said that although everything was very nice the evenings were very quiet. There is only a piano bar and it was not very busy, the casino had only a couple of tables and no slots. It would seem to be a good cruise to catch up on your reading and get lots of rest. HeatherInFlorida Posted August 15, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 15, 2004 We cruised in the South Pacific on Wind Star in 1990. It's a whole different experience; one we have never forgotten and one we can never replace. You're not going to get your fancy suite cabins if that's your pleasure, although back in those days we thought it was pretty darn nice. No balcony, of course, but larger than any we'd had previously and beautifully done. And on a ship like the "Wind Song", you were scarcely in your room other than to sleep. If you need 1000 things to do and Las Vegas style entertainment, forget it. At each port the locals would come onboard and entertain us in the evenings. Bora Bora (where we anchored overnight) the entertainment was particularly beautiful under the starlit sky and great fun for the men who got to dance with the hula-type dancers (they're called something else in Tahiti and I can't remember the word). With only about 175 people onboard, you basically know everyone. It's a very casual feel ... the dress code for dinner is "casual elegance". At night we would sit out on deck under the stars and enjoy simply the sea and the billowing white sails above or they'd bring dinner up on deck with a spectacular barbeque and bananas flambe cooked up fresh before your eyes. On Bora Bora they brought practically the entire kitchen out to a motu for lunch where they fired up mahi mahi on a giant grilll with all sorts of other delicious morsels and fruits the likes of which I've never tasted before or since. We were treated like royalty, so far beyond any other ship I have ever been on. Of course we were in ports like Moorea, Huahini and Bora Bora, what could go wrong? And nothing did. It's an experience I recommend, but like anything else, it isn't right for everyone.
OCruisers Posted August 15, 2004 #7 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Our "Almost" experience with Wind Star was a bit different! :( We had booked a Wind Star Cruise way in advance and were really looking forward to it! 28 Days before our sail date, we were "Bumped-Off"! It seems the TOTAL ship had been sold to a "Private Group Cruise"! We were luckier than many because we had booked our "Air" through Wind Star so we did get ALL money back. Some had booked "non-cancel" airline reservations OnTheirOwn and they were (to put it nicely ) not so lucky! Most of you folks look forward to your cruises as much as we do to ours so you certainly UNDERSTAND that we were disappointed and are now very apprehensive about booking Wind Star again! :( Happy Sailing & Better Luck with Wind Star! HeatherInFlorida Posted August 15, 2004 #8 Share Posted August 15, 2004  AWK!!!! Awful!! I don't blame you; I wouldn't be booking them either after such an experience! I should tell you that we did have a bad experience in 2001 right after 9/11. We had a cruise booked and stupidly had not bought the insurance (last time ever we do that:) ). I was uncomfortable travelling so soon after 9/11 but they assured me it was perfectly safe. I begged them to credit us at least half of our $1000 deposit toward another cruise and they flat out said "no". While they were certainly within their rights to deny my request, I think it would have been good business to give me the credit. As a result, sadly, I told them I will never cruise Windstar again. Not a nice story after the wonderful experience I wrote above. But it didn't take away from our joyous cruise in French Polynesia.
