Hello! I was on the August 1st sailing of the crown princess, with 19 other family and friends. I have been on many a cruises but this was the first and last time using princess. I'll go into detail as I continue. Embarkating in brooklyn was a breeze. We literally walked right onto the ship in less than 10 minutes. The layout of the ship was a bit crazy because you had to walk all around the mulberry bush to get where you wanted to go. Bewhere, elevators don't go to every floor unless you are in the center set!!! Stairs will often be your best bet, but for our group we sometimes needed the elevator because my grandmother can't walk up or down 10 flights of steps. Someone would usually pair off with her and meet the rest of us wherever we planned on going. The movement on the ship was so bad. You felt everything and it was not pleasent. It felt as if there was no stabilizer!!! Never had this problem on Royal!!!

Food: Buffet food was almost always cold, even if you got there when it first opened up. We had set dinner at 8:15 in Boticelli dining room which was ok, but a bit lame compared to the 3-story dining rooms on royal caribbean. There were always unique food choices and definately catering more to the seafood selections. Out of 20 people in our group about 18 were unhappy with the quality and food choice.

Crown Grille: Most amazing place to eat on the ship!!! It was a $25 charge but who cares- we went twice... Filet Mignon was amazing! Nothing like the "filet" they serve in the dining room!!!

Room service: The 2nd day we called for room service and I asked for chicken strips with french fries, instead of the cesar salad that it came with and the response on the other end of the phone was "don't you have a blue portfolio in your cabin" and I said yes, and the man said "you need to review the menu that is not a choice" and he hung up. Talk about rude. Definately not happy about that.

Cabins: They aren't as tiny as everyone makes them out to be. My best friend and I shared a cabin and we had plenty of space. The shower space is a rumor because there is plenty of room to do what you need to do!!! Altho, it is a bit tricky trying to shave your legs!!! Oh most importantly, never take a cabin in the front of the ship.. you feel everything!!! We were in Riviera 208... our whole party was scattered on this floor and noone wanted to ever come to our room because you felt every wave we hit!!!

Casino: Supposedly considered the largest casino afloat... hahaha! This was literally the smallest casino I have ever seen on a ship. My grandmother was so excited when I told her how big it was supposed to be and when she saw it, she was so disappointed. She loves to gamble!!

Spa: My friend and I had hot stone massages... felt amazing- still have bruises all over our bodies!!! The experience was not like going to a regular spa where they give you robes and tea. Here you were put in a tiny room and had your massage. Definately worth it tho!

Pools: GROSS GROSS GROSS!!!! I miss salt-water pools.. never thought i'd say that!!! You would think with fresh water pools they would be on the cleaner side.. but no. I went to go in the pool one day but it was so dirty and so cloudy that you couln't see the bottom! I was not about to get into something like that!!! My saving grace was the adult pools. The swim against the currant pool was nice, not too crowded. Ladies beware- the swim against the currant machine has the power to pull off any type of bathing suite top you wear!!!

Chairs: Do not expect a chair near the pool unless you are on deck by 8am the latest... pretty stupid if you ask me.

Princess Theater: This accomodates about 800 people. Well, when you have well over 3,000 on board who want to see a show, even if going at the two available times that still only covers about half the people on board. Get to the shows atleast 20-30 minutes in advance if you want to sit and or see what is going on. The shows were really bad though. You would think it was their first night ever performing!!! Motor City was cute tho.

Ports:

Bermuda was nice- we did the crystal caves and aquarium. It rained so we were happy to have an indoor tour!!!

Puerto Rico- my friend and I were booked about 2 months in advance for the Bioluminescent Kayak tour which was cancelled due to operational difficulties...big disappointment.. we would up going on the old/new san juan tour with the other 18 people in our group. It was not too bad.. el morro fort was pretty cool!

St. Thomas- Meagans Beach Bay tour-- definately seen nicer beaches, yet it is hailed as one of the top 10 beaches of the world!!! Water was warm and beautiful tho!! The sand didn't look that great- but I was later told it is all composed of volcanic materials.

Grand Turk: Most relaxing, beautiful island!!! There are no natives harassing you and you walk off the ship and there you are right on the beach. We took the trolly train 2 miles down to governors beach to snorkel-- saw no fish but tons of sand dollars which was awesome! We went back to margaritaville- which if you have ever gone in Florida, vegas, or anywhere else- you will be a bit disappointed because the menu has about 5 items on it, not the same as elsewhere.

Staff: The staff on the ship were always rude, walked with their head down and never really acknowledged you, except the room stewards..

Crooners: The best martini bar on the ship- well, the only martini bar!!! It was sooo good! I recomend the Buttery Chocolate-tini!!! Its a great after dinner drink!!! Serana was a great waitress there and always attentive!!!

**Beware of the safe in your room-- we had issues from day one and thought they were resolved but apparently not because the last night my friend counted her money and put it in the safe. The next morning we emptied the safe and the money was GONE!!!! Money had been slowly disappearing throughout the trip but we figured it was spent and we didn't realize. WRONG- someone- we don't know who (obviously staff- or most likely our room steward who we thought we liked). Just be careful.**

Princess also screwed up my credit card- which i would up putting my charges onto my father's card ($850) but princess still hit my card for a random $1350 out of nowhere  . I cancelled my credit card and called princess and they were of no help. Who knows?? They have bad service skills.

Also, one last complaint is how every cabin has your name tag on the mailbox... just put my initial and last name.. instead its Ms. Mrs. or whatever... my cabin was two young ladies, myself, a 23 year old teacher and my friend a 23 year old law student. Just not right to have us published on there- making it easy for men to target women!

Overall we had a good time, but I would never use princess again... to many little issues that we never dealt with on any other cruiseline or any vacation for that matter. I will remain faithful to Royal Caribbean from this day forward! :D

happy sails to any and all going out to sea!!!

Thanks for the review Puglet and I'm sorry you were not pleased.

Maybe some research before you went might have helped, most people realize the bow of the ship can be rougher than other areas. Maybe next time you should book a cabin in the middle.

We have sailed RCCL and I see a lot of similarities between the two. Voyager can be pretty chopped up because of the ice skating rink and where the kitchens are located. We never got a chair by the pool on RCCL because of chair hogs and we got there @ 8:30 am but always found a lounger a deck up, same as you will on Princess.

At least you know now that RCCL is your cruise line and you will be happy on it.

Sorry you had so many issues!

Did you book the trolley to Governors beach through the ship? Or could you just hop on it? How much was the cost?

Im a huge fan of Royal Caribbean also... Im going on the 9/6 saling on the Crown. My first with Princess.. Thanks for the tip on the safe, I will be watching!!!

We were also on the 8/1 Crown sailng. This was our 2nd cruise on the Crown and we loved both. You can feel them movement of the ship, but not more than any other ship we have been on. We were a group of 17 and all of us thought the food in the dining room was very good. We thought the staff was very friendly and helpful. The only thing I agreed with was that the theater is too small for all the passengers.

I guess everyone has different expectations.

Hi Puglet, sorry you had a less than perfect cruise...I wonder did your friend report the loss? and your other point is very sensible perhaps you should drop them a line with your suggestion

Wow - And I just booked my very first cruise and it's on Princess. Did I make a mistake? Every other thing I've been reading here seems to indicate that most folks have had wonderful experiences. Perhaps yours was just a cruise of your perception? Are you normally so critical of other things?

Sorry you had a bad cruise -- some people prefer Princess, some NCL, some Royal Caribbean, and so on. Efrain, I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure there were a lot of passengers who loved their cruise. If everyone favored the same cruise line, that one would be full and the others nearly empty. There's really no consensus. I do think that some homework in advance can forestall disappointments for some cruisers. For instance, Princess by design has several smallers DRs instead of one multi-story DR. Go into your trip with an open mind and it should be a great time.

No, you didn't make a mistake!!

We were on the 8/1 sailing of the Crown...our fourth cruise on this ship...and had a wonderful time. Although we did feel movement at times...hey, we were on a moving ship...we felt it was one of the smoothest cruises we have been on.

I will not dispute anything the OP wrote, I just want to say that our experience was quite different.

Was some food not to our liking...sure. However, there are so many offerings in both the buffet restaurants and in the dining rooms that an alternate selection can be made quite easily. I would suggest that all cruise ships and itineraries have their high and low points; you just need to go with the flow to maximize your enjoyment.

We are usually Celebrity cruisers and are used to high quality food and excellent service. That said....we sailed the Crown in June and had a wonderful time. We really enjoyed the ship and had no problems navigating around. We thought the food in the dining room was very good and even though I'm not a seafood eater I always found something delicious for dinner. Loved the love boat dream dessert and the gelato was excellent. We had dinner and Sabatini's one night and enjoyed it.

We had a midship cabin and didn't feel a thing although out cruise was exceptionally smooth sailing and great weather. No issues with the safe at all. As for service...our cabin steward was wonderful and helpful. Our waiters were not so great compared to the excellent care we always received on Celebrity but they were not terrible either. Mostly indifferent. That said...I didn't expect the same level of service as on Celebrity mostly because of the automatic tipping on Princess. There is no motivation. (We had traditional late dining) Loved, loved the lunches in the daVinci dining room and we thought service there was better than the Botticelli. Don't need, don't miss 3 story dining rooms that feel like banquet halls. I liked the more intimate dining rooms on Crown.

We didn't order room service so that was not an issue.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but wanted to let those know who are waiting for their Crown cruises to go with an open mind and I'm sure that they will have a wonderful time. We enjoyed Princess so much that we have booked the Caribbean Princess for next summer.

Such a shame you didn't have a good time. Sorry for that.

Just a thought though, you could have taken the paper with your name on it out of the slot in the mailbox . . .

Also, pointing fingers without proof regarding the money situation is a bit unfair.

And finally, was there anything you enjoyed about the cruise? It really sounds as if your expectations might have been way too high. I've sailed on RCI too and you really cannot compare the ships. There are pluses and minuses everywhere. But it just sounds like you had 9-days from he** . . .

I know that I had 9-days of pure bliss!

Sorry to hear about your disastrous experience. It really surprised me since we were on the same sailing. We had a midship cabin and hardly felt the movement at all except when were were all the way forward and aft, but even then it wasn't as dramatic as you make it sound. I havent' been on RCCL but I'm sure it's no better there.

Food: Buffet food was almost always cold, even if you got there when it first opened up. We had set dinner at 8:15 in Boticelli dining room which was ok, but a bit lame compared to the 3-story dining rooms on royal caribbean.

If by 'lame' you mean it was more quiet and intimate, I'll take it any time!

There were always unique food choices and definately catering more to the seafood selections. Out of 20 people in our group about 18 were unhappy with the quality and food choice.

I find that hard to believe. 18 out of 20 is a high estimate, considering everyone I spoke to who dined in Botticelli DR was delighted with the food. I must have missed your table.:)

Crown Grille: Most amazing place to eat on the ship!!! It was a $25 charge but who cares- we went twice... Filet Mignon was amazing! Nothing like the "filet" they serve in the dining room!!!

Yes, the fact that food is free sometimes leads to believe it's of a lesser quality. At $25 pp, on the other hand, Crown Grill's had to be better![/B]

With 3389 passengers on a ship the water is bound to be a little cloudy. The difference with sea water pools is that see water is not as clear as fresh water;)

My saving grace was the adult pools. The swim against the currant pool was nice, not too crowded. Ladies beware- the swim against the currant machine has the power to pull off any type of bathing suite top you wear!!!

May be my impression, but it was the nicest cruise staff I've ever encountered, always smiling and courteous.

Crooners: The best martini bar on the ship- well, the only martini bar!!! It was sooo good! I recomend the Buttery Chocolate-tini!!! Its a great after dinner drink!!! Serana was a great waitress there and always attentive!!!

Since there were other people in the room with you I think it's unfair to blame the cabin steward. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

Princess also screwed up my credit card- which i would up putting my charges onto my father's card ($850) but princess still hit my card for a random $1350 out of nowhere  . I don't mean to be critical of your review; in fact I agree with some of your negative points, such as the quality of the production shows and the layout of the ship, as well as the few positive comments you made. I just don't agree with the overall dismal light it sheds on the Crown experience when it fact it was your own particular experience that turned out to have been a negative one.

We love Royal Caribbean but tried Crown Princess in May since we wanted to see some other ports and try a 9-day trip. Grand Turk was a beautiful stop, and our first trip to Bermuda was wonderful.

Some aspects of Crown Princess ship design were pretty cool. We enjoyed the aft pool out behind the buffet, and it took a few days for some to discover it, so it wasn't usually crowded.

Sorry you had problems-- we had one or two, but we would do it again anytime.

I have sailed on the Crown before, actually giving it one more shot next month, and have many of the same criticisms that you have. The layout of this gorgeous ship is choppy. The buffet area, the show room and lounge designs are a fatal flaw that I don't believe can be rectified. The lobby is magnificent, though. The room layout is the most efficient of any room I have ever stayed in on any cruiseline, although Celebrity ships come in a close second. Not having those silly closet doors across from the bathroom and entrance door are the best. The bedding is fabulous.

Customer service absolutely stinks. I truly agree with the OP on this. We had charges that we had to fight to get removed on our credit card. We had problems with the tour desk, the captian's circle host and the purser's desk ...needed to speak with a supervisor and after several attempts, we were given a letter on the last day of our cruise in which we could lodge our complaint. This was slipped under our door without the courage of face to face contact. Yowsa!! So, we are trying them one more time as our complaint did result in an ample (not generous) future cruise credit. Now, of the things we did enjoy, which is why we will offer the second chance

  • The International Cafe - yum!
  • The bedding and closets - yes!
  • Dining rooms and service - no complaints there! Only praise for the wait staff and maitre'd. Never had excellent food on a cruise...may try Sabatini's this time.
  • The strolling entertainment
  • Crooners martini / piano bar
  • MUTS - take a hat though - loved the popcorn (what's a move without popcorn??
  • Pizzaria - nice alternative to formal dining room - plus, they insisted on making something for us to eat at 5 minutes to midnight. We told them we would do room service instead (too long in the casino and lost track of time) but they insisted on making something for us. Very sweet!!

The casino was just ok...never won otherwise might have thought it better....so it is probably on our stay away from list. Other items on that going to skip it list are:

  • Buffets - design flaw...what, nobody has seen food in the last week??
  • Captian's Circle Host - the worst ever!!
  • Captain's party for repeat cruisers - split into so many different parties in dinky little cocktail lounges -- the most boring ever! Scheduled during the one show we wanted to see --- tried to switch and were not allowed. Now that is treating a Platinum member like they don't want to see us make elite
  • Sanctuary - the 'quiet area' was disturbed by screaming children but Princess staff was not allowed to say anything to them. When we asked if we could chose an alternate time to visit -- we were told yes but then denied entrance unless we paid a second time.
  • Tour desk - messed up our reservation in San Juan and had to visit 3 times to receive credit back on our card

I can sympathize with your (the original post's) complaints...but glad to hear you made the best of it. I never really thought about it before, but agree whole heartedly with your comment on not posting the full names on the door for all to view. Smart girl!! You can never be too careful. I am curious about your cabin steward. I have known others that have had items missing from their rooms....only heard of this happening on Princess, though. We once forgot the combination we chose for the safe and discovered that it was very easy for them to come and open it up for us. It was our stupidity but the ease for them to get to our items was a lesson learned. We also have checked our bill....and always on that last day, we have additional charges attached to our bill. Very interesting...always that last day and always on Princess. So sad that we have to be so wary and dilegent on a vacation that we so look forward to.

Puglet- I just returned from the 8/10 sailing of the Crown and had a great time. I did not encounter the issues you had

I also noticed the "cloudy" water in the pools. Actually they were not cloudy at all. The cement pools were loosing their vibrant blue color, which could make them appear dirty. The Neptune and Calypso pools were both painted during the sailing (different days) and they looked very different afterwards. Very clear and blue!:)

I am always leary of very negative reviews from a first time poster. Especially when almost every point was a negative one.

Obviously some cruise lines are preferred than other with some people.

I have always loved the staff on Princess and even though I may encounter someone "I" think is being rude, sometimes it is "my" interpretation that is wrong.

With regards to the safe, the safes are programmed by you so I doubt anyone was tampering with it. If money went missing I am truely sorry about that, but I don't think you should point your finger at the steward.

The name tag for your room is a good point; however I like having this so that my friends and even I can find my room, especially when so many look alike. If you didn't want this you could of easily removed the tag as so people do.

Yes chairs around the pool fill up, but there are always chairs a bit further away or one deck up.

I don't know this post just sounds a little fishy being their first and only post. My opinion.

I read the entire review thru and I don't feel she was overly negative.

She liked the cabin, thought it was bigger than she expected. Liked the specialty restaurant. Liked the booze. Liked the massages. Thought the ship was good looking.

Her negatives. Main theater nowhere big enough for a ship this size. Correct. Buffet food never warm enough. Her opinion. Ship layout doesn't flow as well as Royal's. Agree, but still better than any Carnival with the up and down marches. Front desk screwed up all the time. Royal has interactive computer system with front end thru the room tv so you can always check your account and catch mistakes, including stuff put on 3 AM on the final day. Room service blew her off. We were not there, she was. Staff on Princess never as friendly as Royal. Depends on who you have.

This will be academic as Princess is pulling the Crown from NY and replacing with the older CB and abandoning the 7 day Florida market.

I can visualize her reaction if her family was forced into anytime even after they had confirmed traditional. Then you would have seen negativity.

I thought her review was fair and balanced. She told what she liked and what she didn't. Definitely not a troll.

hey.. i'm sorry if my post was too negative for everyones liking. I have been on many a cruises and this was just my point of view. I did enjoy my trip and made the most of my time.. I just had high expectations- mostly from reading everyones posts on here... I never posted on here before mainly because I do not have the time, and only recently discovered this website a year ago. As far as everyones negative comments- that is fine. It really does not have any effect on me. I took my trip and shared my experience. I have cruised royal caribbean more than 10 times and never had one single problem. I have been on 8 carnival cruises, again never had one issue. First time on princess- had more than one issue.

As far as the issue with the safe.. yes you are the one who programs it- but there is an over-ride code that had to be used the first 3 nights of our cruise because of issues with it working properly. As far as assuming the steward stole the money- I said it was our thought.. and there were only two of us in the room and I have no reason to steal my friends money. It was actually taken care of thankfully to the cameras located up and down the hallways.

***Governors beach on grand turk- we did the trolly train but its cheaper to take a $3 cab ride than pay for the trolley. The trolly actually broke down and by the time we made it down to the beach it was 2:30, meanwhile the ship docked at 1... but it worked out just fine because it was really hot that day.

***old san juan/new san juan tour was ok.. el morro fort was pretty cool- you get to climb and walk all around- you can even go into the dungeon- which is pretty interesting. The younger kids were a bit disappointed but it was not bad at all.

sorry you think my review is fishy- oh well, get over it. i don't have the time you have to come on and reply to every single persons beck-and-call. i too have a life and it is not cruisecritic.com. i have a family, a life, a job and other responsibilities. when i get on here- i do, and if not- oh well. sorry if this is your life goal, to come on here and post for everyone. i just dont have all this free time. get over it. vbmenu_register("postmenu_11290022", true);

My opinion.

Obviously you took offense to my opinion, but I didn't say all your comments were negative. I said almost all your comments were negative.

I also said not every cruise line is preferred by everyone. I definately have my favorites.

I did say I was sorry that some money went missing, that can be very discomforting when travelling.

I commented that I liked your suggestion about the name tag at the door, but I came up with a solution, just remove it.

I never said you didn't know what you were talking about, but that it sounded fishy, and like all reviews I dropped the ones that say everything was "perfect" and the ones that say everything was "bad" and look at the middle ones.

I didn't sink to insulting comments, but your comments in your last posts say a lot, and I will leave it at that.

again just "my opinion" so no one take offense!!

Puglet, we will be on the 10/20 cruise and this will only be our 2nd Princess cruise, so I appreciated your thoughts and experiences. The only thing that scared the pants off me was the missing $ and extra charges. DH is VERY BAD about keeping track of charges, so I will have to warn him. We usually cruise CCL and they have your shipboard account that you can access on your tv which is great. I just wanted to say: you are 23 yo and from what I read, this was your 19th cruise. You are my HERO! :D ;)
