bunnypug Posted August 24, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 24, 2004 Hi Leaving on Caribbean Princess, out of Fort Lauderdale. Want to buy some champagne and have heard mention of getting wine at PUBLIX but I don't know where that is. Is it overpriced or resonable? Any info on this would be helpful, would love to not have to drag a couple of bottles all the way from Seattle. Thanks!
smeyer418 Posted August 24, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 24, 2004 Publix is very reasonable. Its the local inexpensive super market. there are numerous ones in the area http://store.publix.com/publix/cgi/selection?mapid=US&place=fort+lauderdale®ion=FL%2CUS&zip=&x=65&y=
CruiseFever Posted August 24, 2004 #3 Share Posted August 24, 2004 There is also a liquor store across the street from Publix but for one stop shopping Publix is your place.
bunnypug Posted August 24, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted August 24, 2004 Thanks for the link! Does anyone know the closest store to the pier?
Rare PescadoAmarillo Posted August 24, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 24, 2004 17th St (or Causeway), just west of the port entrance by a minute or so.
Toto2Kansas Posted August 24, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 24, 2004 Publix, across from the Embassy Suites is the closest we have found to the pier. They have a very large wine selection and it is much less expensive then what we can find here at home. Facing the Publix if you look to your left across the side street, that is where you will find the liquor store. But be aware that on Sundays, nothing can be sold before noon, so plan accordingly! Johanna7 Posted August 24, 2004 #7 Share Posted August 24, 2004 We were in Fort Lauderdale 3 days ahead of the cruise in March and found a large apartment. It had a living room, large kitchen with stove & fridge, bedroom and bathroom. It was in an older place across from the beach. Due to the fact it was biker week and spring break, we were fortunate. We drove to the Publix and loaded up. They have EVERYTHING you might need and anything they do not, the Eckers Drug store next door to the one on 17th Street causeway has it. Including one hour film developing. It is a pleasure to shop there. Only danger, you may end up with a lot more stuff than you intended.
GKR Posted August 24, 2004 #8 Share Posted August 24, 2004 We have stopped at the PUBLIX before each cruise leaving Ft. Lauderdale. It's not a bad walk from the ship. We board, drop off our carry-on bags in the cabin, and head out to 17th, then turn left a couple blocks. Less than 15 minutes. The store has everything you may need, and a large wine selection. You'll see lots of other cruisers in there stocking up! Then it is probably easier (depending on how much you buy) to take a cab back to the pier. It is about a $5 cab fare, and taxis are always circulating through the parking lot--you don't have to call for a cab.
Tina0922 Posted August 24, 2004 #9 Share Posted August 24, 2004 Just remember guys....Sat and Sun are the busiest days for the stores, you will have big crowds. You are going to have the locals doing weekly shopping, cruise passengers stocking up, and also the crew from all the ships doing shopping as well. If you get in a day or two before, I would suggest to go then. As season approaches, the busier it will get. In high season there will be anywhere from 6-10+ cruise ships in on the weekends! Just leave ample amount of time if you go the same day as the ship sails and be paitient. Publix is really reasonable and does have EVERYTHING as stated above. It is located in the 'Southport' shopping center right on 17th Street Causway and Cordova Drive.
cruiseAZ Posted August 25, 2004 #10 Share Posted August 25, 2004 We stayed at the Embassy Suites on 17th Street and shopped at the Publix, Eckert, liquor store and at the Winn Dixie across the street on Friday afternoon. Eckert had the best prices on bottled water. We got a 24 pack, taped our Princess tag on it and had the porter bring it on board. The champaigne prices at Eckert were good. beachfanatic Posted August 25, 2004 #11 Share Posted August 25, 2004 have stayed on 17th street often and have always bought our champagne at the liquor store in the same shopping center as the publix. Very convenient and prices were the same as i've paid at home for Moet.

Tania Posted August 25, 2004 #13 Share Posted August 25, 2004 The liquor store close to the Publix is called Crown, across the street from the Embassy Suites. They even filled up our small rollerboard with the wine, soda, and champagne. They're in the phone book. Also sell cigars. If you're staying at Embassy suites, they're across the street. I'm sure this thread gave you more info that you wanted...LOL...

Northender Posted August 25, 2004 #19 Share Posted August 25, 2004 Thanks, Wendy - will Crown deliver to ship. Just thinking of doing our order on Saturday evening and have it delivered to ship around 2pm. That way the champagne and white wine would be still chilled. :) :) :p
