travel visa

Does anyone know if a travel visa is required for entry into Dominica Republic? I was on travel.state.gov and it said something about one being required.... is that for airtravel only or does cruise travel also require a visa???

If you are traveling to the DR by air, you will need a valid US passport, and need to purchase the tourist card when you arrive.

If you are traveling by sea / cruise, you need only a state issued ID and proof of citizenship, ie birth certificate (or a passport if you have it).

Although the US has relaxed it's re-entry requirements due to the backlog and delay of passport processing, the DR requires US citizens to carry a passport for entry into their county.

How are you traveling?

AGR8RN... We are travelling via cruiseship. I have my passport, however my travelling companions have not... I understand the requirements as far as passport goes, I was just wondering about a visa... I will try to give the DR Embassy a call tomorrow to find out ...

Thanks

Greetings from the DR!!!

If you are arriving via cruiseship and staying for the day you don't need to have a visa as you will be treated as an in transit passenger (similar to the other caribbean ports of call).

Also if you arrive via plane to transfer to the curiseport and take a cruise you will be treated as an in transit passenger and no visa or tourist card is required (this applies if you are staying in the country for less than 24 hours) .

However if you are staying in country for more than 24 hours and are a US/Canadian or EC citizen you will need to get the tourist card and show proof of citizenship. No visa is required.

In addition I know that citizens from Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay don't need a Visa.

I will try to get a complet listing of inmigration/visa requirements for posting.

Regards, DR_GUY :)

Dear all: Please find below the DR visa requirement by country. It's in Spanish but I will translate. "Sin Visa" is no visa. "Visa" is that a Visa is required, "T. Turismo" is that a tourist card is needed (this can be purchased at the airport or port upon entry). "Sin Visa/Sin T. Turismo", means that nor visa or tourist card is needed. IF you have any additional questions let me know.

Best Regards and welcone to DR. DR_Guy :)

If you're American, for air travel you only need to buy a tourist card in the airport. I'm not sure what you'd need for the port if you arrive on a cruiseship. You may want to contact the Dominican Embassy in New York: http://www.domrep.org/

Hope this helps!

We will be staying a total of 36 hours awaiting our cruise. What type of documents will I need?.. If it is in fact a tourist card what is the cost..? Is over 24 hours a new requirement with an additional cost??.Thanks for any help you can give...

Hi Denise and Rick!

Since your're not docking with your cruiseship, you need to purchase the tourist card which is US$10.00 per person. This is payable in CASH at the airport when you arrive. I pasted below a question from the FAQ page of the Dominican Embassy with the explanation.

http://domrep.org/faqconsular.html

1)Which documents do I need to enter the Dominican Republic?

If you are an American citizen, after January the 1rst 2007, you will need a valid passport and a tourist card that can be purchased at any airport in the Dominican Republic for a cost of US$10.00. Before January the 1rst 2007, you can travel with an ID and a Birth Certificate (both documents are required. If you are a Green Card holder you will need your Green Card and a tourist card. Please, Contact the consulate for exceptions.

Hope it helps!!

Help! Others are posting that if you arrive at the airport and get transferred directly to the ship then you do NOT need to get the Tourist Card. Is this true please??

Hi - we will be arriving in Santo Domingo 2 days prior to our cruise - we are doing b2b cruises so will be arriving on 2/29 and flying our 3/16 - we will be on the ship for two weeks but time between arrival flight and departure flight is over 14 days. I've read that the tourist card is only good for 14 days. I've been told not a problem and worse case would be additional fee when leaving. Can anyone give me an answser. Thanks

check with your airline/ta as we have gone to dominican republic tons of time by plane and the tourist card is given on the plane(already included in our ticket). and u just put the dates on the card when u will be entering and leaving. u could also ask for extra tourist cards on the plane, they have given people extras for free. then when u come back from the cruise u will have one for free to exit.

I've talked with my TA and Royal Caribbean, Dominician Republic travel web site and still am unsure if the Tourist Card is good for only 14 days or up to 60 days. I'm just going to wait until we get there and ask since we're coming in 2 days early we have a full day to do whatever is needed if need be. Again Thanks Susan
