Antigua Help Needed

Recommended Posts

We are going to be in Antigua for a day and need advice. We have been to Runaway Beach and are looking for feedback on another beach, one less crowed but with bathrooms & chair/umbrellas that we could rent. We are also interested in Prickly Pear Island as we have heard it's a great place.

Did you check the threads about Antigua on the ports of call boards?

We did all day water tours both times we were there... there are tons of beaches so I would hope you could get some ideas from the Antigua board.

Good luck and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were in Antibua earlier this year, and give Gordon (and Carl) the best possible recommendation.

To make a long story short, I ended up arranging for 22 of us from our roll call to tour with Gordon(which ended up with his cousin Carl at antiguapremieretours). We had our own bus PLUS a support vehicle which followed us all over and supplied rum punch, punch, fresh bananas and pineapples, and other goodies. We were the envy of all the other tours that dady. He can make arrangements for large groups like we had or small ones. He is simply fantastic.

Antigua is beautiful and is one of the places we would go back to for a land vacation.

Happy Sails to You

Darkwood beach on the south west side (just south of the village of Bolans and the Jolly Beach resort) is very nice and not well known. We were there about 5 years on a cruise stop but had been there previously when staying in Antiqua. There is a small reef there for snorkeling and a beach bar for drinks, food and washrooms which I believe also rents chairs and umbrellas.

We would have gone back earlier this year when on our Serenade cruise but had English friends staying at Dickenson Bay so went there to spend the day with them. We arrange transport with a taxi away from the pier since we got a better price by negotiating with the driver who knew he wasn't going to get a fare since there was a huge number of other taxis ahead of him and got to take us both ways. We just told him when to come back for us. We returned, for a few extra dollars, by way of Fig Tree Drive and English Harbor/Nelson's Dockyards thus giving our friends a little tour of that part of the island. We only stopped at English Harbor (at Clarance House) to take a few pictures and didn't go into the Dockyards or up to Shirley Heights there but that is a possibility if you want.

We really enjoyed Prickly Pear Island excursion that we booked thru RCI. Miguel (older gentleman) and his family are hospitable and provide a nice lunch. The fish was quite tasty (not a big seafood fan), crab meat, chicken, fresh fruit, assorted salads. They were not stingy with the drinks either, open bar.

Nice chair with an umbrella, beautiful unspoiled beach. Bathroom facilities are just basically out-houses, though. No one to bother you and try to sell you stuff at all. Truly relaxing and enjoyable experience. We'd go back in a heart-beat.

We were on Antigua last Jan. I Emailed Grand Pineapple Beach Resort and made reservations for day passes. It was a very nice all-inclusive resort, took about 30 min to get there in a taxi, there were 8 of us so it worked well.

What was the cost of the cab ride to Pineapple? Did you have to buy the day passes in advance or when you arrived?

I don't remember the exact price of the taxi--but I do recall going back was about 5 dollars less than getting there. No idea why.

We paid for the passes when we got there. Put your deposit down for your towels when you pay for your pass otherwise you will have to leave the pool area and make your way back to the registration area....put down your towel deposit and the go back to the pool...hand them your voucher...and finally get your towel. Very annoying.

We will be there next week; and, we have been considering Runaway Beach. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate your impressions vis-a-vis the sand and water quality and availability of chair rentals.

Thank you-Jack Diamond
