Tortola beaches

We will be crusing on the NCL Dawn in February. We are basically just beach bums..would prefer to hang at a beach than anything. Are there beaches available just off the ship or do we need to book an excursion?

 

These boards are great. Our first cruise was last year on the Carnival Liberty and we became addicted! Now we live and work for our next cruise. The info we have found on these boards has been so helpful. And most of you are right. A cruise is whatever you make it (just like anything else in life). There are always twists and turns in the road, but that is part of the game. For us, cruising is the perfect vacation, no matter what the weather or the food is like!:)

We took a cab OVER the hill to Cane Garden Bay. Nice beach, nice water, with some services. The cab came back and got us. It was 5 or 6 US dollars PP each way.

 

If you're really an adventurer, take a tour over to the Baths on Virgin Gorda. It's a bit pricy, though.

LOL, Glad to see you did not understate OVER! Boy that was one heck of a ride!!

what date are you going? Feb 24th for us. Waht are you going to do in Samana?

We leave on the 10th. In Samana, we are going to Cayo Levantado.

We are also heading to Tortola in Feb, Cane garden is very nice beach, I only wish we would be there longer, we are only in Tortola from 7 am to 1pm. We will take a taxi to Cane Garden, there are plenty of them waiting once you get off the ship. :)

We are renting a jeep to see all the beaches on our own :)

We rented a 4WD at Hertz just outside the port gate and went to Longs Bay (Next to the Resort), free parking at end of road, quiet, great beach and scenery.

Cane Garden bay will probably get a lot of cruise ship pax. It is probably the most 'touristy' beach on the island. The sandy beaches are generally on the North side of the island which equates to going OVER the hills. You aren't kidding!! Our cab driver only knew one speed . . . fast! But this beach is beautiful . . probably the prettiest island I've ever been to . . . and there are some great photo opp stops on the drive to Cane Bay. there's a little restaurant/bar on the beach there that has really good food too.

Long Bay beach is just beautiful! I spent a few hours there on our cruise last March, and I highly recommend it.

This is what we did last year LOL it was the ride of a lifetime:D It was a lot cheaper than the beach excursion and pretty fun too. We had people praying that the taxi made it up one hill then around a curb LOL. One guy vowed to quit smoking if the taxi made it....

 

It was one of the most beautiful beaches ever!

we went to long bay, it was great, it is on the other side of island about a half hour ride each way but we loved it. ( the beach not the roller coaster ride there and back that was nuts!!!) Hardly anyone was there and if you walk down the beach some you can have your own private oasis with no one in sight.There are free (aka no rental fee) loungers all up and down the beach. It was beautiful, great surf for the guys who spent hours body surfing (bring water shoes it is rocky) and the snorkeling was great provided you have a dry snorkel to survive all the waves ( I brought my vest too) I have photos of it on my photo site, click the link and look under the tortola album. the cab ride was 7.00 per person each way, we told the driver when to pick us up and didn't pay until the way home. Food at the restaurant is way overpriced though bring a snack or eat a big breakfast. For the three of us to have lunch-(1 soda, two beers, one serving conch fritters, one chicken wings and one personal pizza) was forty nine dollars and some change.

the text in this link does say that there is a lot of coral off the resort, but tells you where to go to avoid that coral.
