Are zen rays only available thru the mail? I checked their web site and didn't see a store directory anywhere.

I think they are internet retailer mostly. There are some retailers in WA and OR that carry their products. http://www.zen-ray.com/dealers.shtml

They do have a very liberal return policy, which is important when it comes to buying optics online.

I was afraid of that. I wanted to choose between two different pairs without having to buy both and return one.

I saw you used binoculars frequently on another thread. You will probably better off with their summit for its long term value. For backyard birding, I would definitely go with SUMMIT. You can find its close focus of 6 ft will come in really handy (Vista has 12ft close focus). That alone tells a lot about optical design difference between these two.
