We're booked on a 2/2/05 Oceania cruise from Buenos Aires to Rio. In its description of one of the ports - Paranagua, Brazil - Oceania says "On an optional excursion from Paranaqua, you can reach Iguaçu Falls..."

Mike, we are booked for Iguassu Falls on our pre-cruise with Orient Lines. We will fly to the falls from Buenos Aires and see one side of the falls, stay in a hotel overnight and see the other side, have lunch and fly back to BA. I don't know how Oceania will do it but I believe that you need at least 1 overnight.
(Please don't take my word on this as I am going by what I have read) Get in touch with Oceania to get their information.

We were at the Falls this last Feb. We flew to them from BA and stayed in Iguazu for 2 nights. We saw them from both the Argentina and Brazilian sides. We arrived in Iguazu at about 2:30 P.M. Had we been able to stay in the hotel on the park we would have been able to do and see more the first day. The 2nd day was a full day just on the Argentina side. On the 3rd day we crossed over to the Brazilian side, spent a couple of hours viewing the falls from there (that’s all you need) and that afternoon flew back to BA. We were in our BA hotel by 7:00 P.M. You need at least 1 night in the area and if you have time, I recommend you see them from both sides. Have fun!

We were at Iguazzu Falls in March 2003.The falls has 2 distinct sides...the Argentine side you take a small train into to the falls and then hike around on paths getting a variety of views fo the falls. There is also a boat ride that goes under the falls.
We stayed overnight on the Brazilian side at Hotel Das Caterareas. The falls is across the road and there is a path to follow down to Devils Throat (you are literally right in front of the falls). Both sides are great and are a "must see"

You would definately have to fly there from Paranagua. I flew from Sao Paulo with a stop in Ciritiba, which is further west than Paranagua, and it was still nearly an hour from there by air (this was on another trip...not a cruise). The roads into Iguassu are notoriously bad and it is a long ways. Once you get there, it takes about 40 minutes to drive from one side to the other (bus or car or cab).

Be sure you have your passport with you. You will definately need to see both sides of the falls. Since you are already going to Rio, you will have a Brazilian visa already (required). People on our cruise made my arrangements through [url="http://www.southstartours.com"]www.southstartours.com[/url] from Buenos Aires instead of through the ship and saved a lot of money. I also stayed at the Hotel das Catarratas (the best hotel and the only one inside the National Park on the Brazilian side).

The walk on the Brazilian side is spectacular, but has many, many steps. Be forwarned. On the Argentina side you can take the pathways from several stops on the narrow gauge railway. Going up and down steps into the gorge itself is optional on this side, where you can stand on top of the Devil's Throat. I also took one of the motor boat trips that take you right under some of the falls. Spectacular, but you will get soaked in spite of the raincoats they offer (don't bother...it felt great in the heat!).

We just got back from the Falls to the States today! Be sure to take the helicopter ride!!! It's the best way to see them. We also stayed in the park on the Brazilian side---only has 30% of the falls, but has 80% of the view. Bring cash for the 10 minute ride--they don't take credit cards/ $60/p/p with four going ---$80 p/p for two going. I know 10 minutes sounds like no time at all, but it's sufficient to get good photos. They are spread out, so even under the best of conditions viewing from both countries---you are not able to see them all without doing the helicopter. Stay inside the park---the falls are not close to town. We only stayed one night, but with the helicopter ride and staying in the Brazilian park, we never felt we missed anything, plus we had time to visit the frontier where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay met on the Piranha River (yup, those bad little fishies) and the city of Foz do Iguacu.

I have also been contemplating a trip to the Falls but will be going from Rio, our point of dis-embarkation from the HAL cruise.
Through Ipanema.com I was able to locate a two day package to the Falls, Brazilian side. They do allow a free day in which one can travel to the Argentine side. Strangely when asked the agent did not have a price for this one day tour and advised we book it on arrival at the local airport. I would have assumed one could book it from the hotel as well. Would anyone know the cost of a one day trip to the Argentine.
