CMSXJT Posted April 4, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 4, 2008 Choose Island Star as it certainly seemed to have a better write up than Thomsons....... but aftr 24 hours aboad the ship and after talking to other passengers who have sailed with Thomsons, we came to this conclusion. 24 hour buffett - only ate there once - avoided it as the presentation of all the food was disappointing and lacked any WOW....... Rest of the holiday we ate in Island Restaurant, which was still buffett style but with table cloths and cutlery already laid out. The food in here was marginally better than the 24 buffett, but only just. As a treat we ate in Oasis Restaurant one evening where we paid an extra £30. We were so looking forward to eating in here, as the atmosphere looked really nice and also did the food. BUT, there was something lacking. They just seemed really happy to take your money, and almost tried too hard (meal only just luke warm, 30 mins between courses) - (bottle of wine was pored for us and then after 30 minutes we had to ask where the rest was. it had been placed at another table). They advertised Salmon and Sole, and when the meal arrived it was a small portion of flaked Salmon wrapped round with Sword Fish. There was also a Steak House (which we love), but after the experience in Oasis restaurant we decided not to waste any more money. The entertainment was what we actually thought it would be, and no more. Almost like staying at Butlins (well, maybe I was a little harsh with that comment). I certainly did not expect to be playing Bingo.... The actual interior of the ship was a lot better decorated than we had anticipated and was very very nice. We had a Premier Outside Cabin which again was a lot better than I had expected and was located on Deck 10. As many of the lifts were always full we easily walked down to meals each day, which were located on Decks 7/8. This was better than being in one of cabins on Deck 3-7 which would have meant always have to walk up an awful lot of steps. ONE BIG DISAPPOINTMENT FROM THIS SHIP - almost every part of the ship allowed smoking. The Cocktail Bar on Level 7 was an absolute disgrace as it was just full of smokers day and night. We think that have to go on another Cruise with a different company to try and experience the WOW factor that everybody else we know has been telling us about. WE JUST PICKED THE WRONG SHIP AT THE WRONG TIME OF THE YEAR.

Aplmac Posted May 5, 2008 #4 Share Posted May 5, 2008 Interesting review, thanks for the input. Yes, I agree! You should seriously consider writing a (lasting) Review of your cruise so others may benefit from your (good and bad) experiences, over the coming years. Start at... http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/index.cfm where you use the drop-down menu you see there to 'Select a Ship' you're commenting on. Take your time, and write honestly and objectively. People do read these things! .................. Tell you what - before you write your review, go read a few already written by others, to get a feel for what reviews are like. Go to that same URL above and use the 3 drop-down menus (in the blue box) to select the cruise-line,ship and region that you're interested in.
