Cinco de Mayo

I was in Calica/Playa del Carmen for Cinco de Mayo last year. This is an American thing - Mexicans don't celebrate it. This night was the night of the deck party/Mexican buffet, but it really had nothing to do with Cinco de Mayo, it's just when they do it.

The may do something on the ship, but since they usually do a Mexican buffet for the deck party one night anyway, what's the diff? Cinco De Mayo is more the creation of American marketing than Mexican culture. It is not a federal holiday. It is not the day that Mexico celebrates as Independence Day (that's September 16) It started as a regional celebration of a small victory over the Fench and then Madison Ave. decided it was a good excuse to sell Corona, tequila & Doritos. Some of the places that cater to turistas will be "celebrating," but that's it. The state where the battle took place still celebrates. Of course the rest of Mexico may not celebrate it as it was just a temporary set back for the French  . The battle of Puebla was in 1862 and 4,500 troops of the Mexican Army defeated 6,000 French. So Napoleon sent over 30,000 troops and they went on to capture Mexico City and install Maximilian (Napoleon's cousin) as Emperor. The US had been busy with our own Civil War, but now that it was through, the US started assisting Mexico and The Mexican Army threw out the French and Max the first, last and only Emperor of Mexico, was executed in 1867.
