spookie2 Posted April 17, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2008 At a local foreign currency exchange near my home I am being offered 86.9 XPF to 1 USD. This is better than what I have seen today on the internet currency converters, but is this competative with what I could get at the Papeete airport ATM? Sounded good to me, but wasn't sure. Are we there yet? Posted April 17, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2008 I just bought $500 in XPF from my bank here in Canada and was charged 65.3 exchange rate so if you can get it for that then go for it.
wristband Posted April 17, 2008 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2008 Also consider the additional costs assessed by your local exchange. Not just the advertised exchange rate but the "commission and fees" charged which impact the actual XPF francs you will put in your pocket. ATM rate in Papeete in early March - with fees factored in - was roughly 70.
spookie2 Posted April 17, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted April 17, 2008 The transaction fee is just $5. I have exchanged with them on a previous trip.
Are we there yet? Posted April 18, 2008 #5 Share Posted April 18, 2008 The transaction fee is just $5. I have exchanged with them on a previous trip. That is an excellent rate I would say considering we have Royal Certified Service with our bank that we have been banking with for over 25 years.......and were still charged a $2.50 fee. I wish I could have gotten the rate you are getting!;)

meherio Posted April 24, 2008 #12 Share Posted April 24, 2008 Ia orana keep in mind that the cfp franc is tied up to the Euro ( soon to be the official currency of FP ) Check the following chart to see how bad our Dollar is. the initial post is correct for the exchange rate in Dec. http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?from=EUR&to=USD&amt=1&t=2y Also : http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=1&from=USD&to=XPF&submit=Convert Keep in mind that 1 Euro = 119.33 CFP franc ( fixed rate ) so should you get a problem to figure out the rate,.... Hope this helps can't wait to receive my CC bill for this trip Playing the currency roulette. Meherio
