cruise booked now need Accommodation in Sydney

Recommended Posts

ok so we now have cruise out of Sydney booked on RCI Rhapsody of the Seas in November 08 - we also have flights booked from Northern Ireland stopping off for a few hours in Bangkog and on to Sydney and on the return we are staying 2 nights in Singapore - so now the question is accommodation,

We need accommodation in Sydney for 5 nights prior to the cruise - so open to suggestions. Anyone know which area the cruise ships sail from etc and nice but reasonable accommodation in that area.

thanks so much

Barbara

I'm not sure of the size of the Rhapsody but am guessing she's too tall to go under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Therefore, she will berth at Circular Quay.....an excellent location. Downtown, walking distance to the Opera House, restaurants, shopping, ferrries, trains, etc.

We stayed at the Marriott Sydney Harbour Hotel--located just a couple of blocks from Circular Quay--for 2 weeks this past Christmas/New Year and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. Also a great location. (Note: There are two Marriotts in Sydney....the other is Marriott on the Park (or something like that.....it is located further away from Circular Quay by Hyde Park.)

Barbara,

Here's what I posted on the Solo board for a hotel in Sydney and here's a response from someone "down under". This would be an excellent budget choice for Sydney and is in the center of everything. There's a casino and a health club in the hotel, but no public rooms or restaurants. However, the room has a TV,refrigerator, microwave, dishes, coffee pot, and utensils and a small table for 2. It was a comfortable size and had been recently refurbished in 2006.

"I went solo to Australia - I stayed with friends in Adelaide for 8 days, took the overnight train to Sydney and stayed there 3 nights by myself. I loved it. I would have loved to splurge on a hotel with a view of the harbor, but I really only wanted to spend about $100 (US) per night and be in the center of everything. I found the Travelodge (Phillip Street - Martin Place http://www.travelodge.com.au/locatio...t.aspx?b=31&s=) and it was perfect for me. Right in the middle of the financial district within walking distance of everything. There were 2 subway stops nearby as well as the bus, so you could walk or ride. Quiet at night - not much foot traffic later on, but I found it to be a very comfortable location for a woman alone. The room was large, but not fancy, and had a small kitchen area - refrigerator, microwave and sink. The area was definitely upscale - Gucci, etc. I saw some more touristy areas further south near the railroad that had a lot more street action, but were also a bit sketchier. You can get breakfast and lunch nearby (there's a wonderful food court in an office building 2 blocks down the hill), but you'll have to go elsewhere for dinner - Chinatown or the Circular Quay are two good destinations.

I went to the aquarium, the zoo, the botanical gardens, the Chinese garden, and the opera and took several ferry rides between Darling Harbor and Circular Quay. The zoo was fantastic and the evening at the Opera House for La Boheme was magical. If you like walking, explore the Botanical Gardens and come back via the Opera House.

Pull up the attached map - http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um...num=1&ct=image. Find Martin Place and St. James - these are the two subway stops. The hotel is at the "P" in Phillip St. just steps from Hyde Park.

Response from ging466:

"I work across the road from the Philip Street Travelodge mentioned and it is a perfect location to explore Sydney."

We just returned forn the Sapphire 31 night Sydney to LA. We spent 8 nights pre-cuise in Sydney. Check out the site apartments2book.com.

We rented a great 2 bedroom apt in Central Sydney-Oaks Maestri on Sussex and Bathurst. It was agreat find at half the cost of a hotel room. We had a full kitchen, balcony, washer/dryer, and 2 bathrooms. there was also 24 security.

We stayed at the Old Sydney Holiday Inn, a 5 minute walk to the overseas passenger terminal, including the elevator ride from your room to the lobby! We stayed here prior to our cruise on the sapphire princess January 2007, and it was one of the hightlights of our trip, waking up before the sun came up, looking out our window to see the sapphire berthed, an awesome sight with all her lights on.:)

We plan to stay here again prior toour cruise next February.

Cheers,

Michele:)

Good evening - first thanks for taking the time to reply to me.

Oaks Maestri is actually one of the options we have been looking at - so was really glad to get our reply.

Another couple of questions please - firstly how far is the Oaks from the cruise terminal - is it walking distance ie with luggage or would we need to get a taxi?

Did you book the Oaks through a booking agent or directly with them.

I have read both good and bad reports about this accommodation but always travel with an open mind.

Any other info you can give me would be great.

Thanks

- hope you enjoyed your holiday.

Barbara

If you can get the Sydney Harbour Marriott on Priceline for a bid in the general region of USD 150 or so, it will be difficult to beat that for value and location, both for sightseeing and for getting to the International Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay. I think that on another thread you've already been pointed in the direction of http://www.biddingfortravel.com for advicew on how to bid on Priceline.

Hi Barbara,

We also read the many reviews on Trip Advisor regarding the Oaks Maestri in Sydney. We booked 8 nights thru apartments2book.com. You can view the apts on the site. It is very centrally located. You can walk to Darling Harbor. It is right by the Town Hall Station. We bought the pass for several days of transportation all over the city(trains, buses, ferries). We used the train to get everywhere. The Coles Market is less than a five minute walk. I had booked with KST in Sydney to pick us up at the airport and bring us to the cruise port. Same driver picked us up both times. You cannot walk to the ship from the Oaks. It was not expensive.

We had a 2 bedroom/2 bath apt. It was serviced each day. It was very clean. We ate breakfast in each morning. It was great having room to move around and relax at nite in a living room, as we were going to be on the ship in a cabin for 31 days. It worked great for us.

You have a lot to choose from..depends on what you want to spend..for 5 days I would try an apartment, plenty to choose from..we have stayed at the York Apartments, 5 minutes from Circular Quay almost walking distance to Pier 8 so convenient to both berths. Very nice, well appointed and right in the centre of the city convenient to catch bus or underground. For a modest but nice hotel we like the Menzies also on the bus rail lines and has parking. At the cheapest end of the scale we love the Grosvenor which is an old pub, no frills but the best view of the harbour from the roof top BBQ you can imagine for under $100 aussie dollars a night right in the middle of the historic Rocks area. Great atmosphere, no ensuite though.

At the other end of the scale The Observatory, ANA, Hilton, Marriott all great but pricey.

If you want to get away from the activity of the CBD, try the Harbourside Apartments on the north shore, on McMahon's Point, just west of the harbour bridge. It's quite convenient as the harbour water taxi has a regular stop right outside the building on their private pier. Their accomodations range from studios to two bedroom units with full kitchen, baths and laundry. The link is http://www.harboursideapartments.com.au/. Great views and very accessible to everything and everywhere.

We have just booked three nights in a suite at the Sydney Harbour Marriott for February 2009. We used Marriott points (about 25,000 a night for a regular room) and paid to upgrade to a suite (about $150 AUD). If you want to use points fo a regular room it would be 50,000 points a night, so doing it this way was a better deal.
