Yukon Posted May 17, 2008 #3 Share Posted May 17, 2008 Has anyone taken the Carcross Rail and Bus tour? It is 9 hours and $229 pp. Is this tour worth it? I think it is, but different strokes. You can see what the route looks like, though, by combining the Carcross-Skagway rail album at http://www.railsnorth.com/carcross-skagway2007.html (I was on it last May) with my highway guide at http://www.*****/ Murray
littlegap Posted May 17, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted May 17, 2008 Thank you Yukon for reply. I am thinking about booking this tour but since it will be on a Wed. the only way to do it is bus up and train down. Any thoughts on this? Do you know if there is a stop at Emerald Lake? Thanks again!
Yukon Posted May 17, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2008 While I prefer train up and bus down it's really not a big difference. Chilkoot does go to Emerald Lake.
littlegap Posted May 17, 2008 Author #6 Share Posted May 17, 2008 Yes, my preference was train up but Chilkoot only does bus up train down on Wednesdays. I am sure it will be a nice tour regardless. Diana:)
Lucy 'n Lenny Posted May 18, 2008 #7 Share Posted May 18, 2008 Hi All, Just got back from AK on the Golden Princess. Skagway was beautiful! We did the short train/bus tour with Chilkoot and it was terrific. We got back 1/2 hour late, though. Enjoy! Kim

baron45 Posted June 2, 2008 #11 Share Posted June 2, 2008 I also tried to book the #2 package from Chilkoot but they're sold out on my date of arrival. Are there any other tour companies in the area doing the same thing?
Costafox Posted June 2, 2008 #12 Share Posted June 2, 2008 You can try www.frontierexcursions.com although I don´t think they do the train/bus combination tour. I haven't used them as we did the Chilkoot Charters #2 tour but you might find something to interest you. Best Wishes Gill
mochuck Posted June 3, 2008 #13 Share Posted June 3, 2008 What was the lunch like on #2?
Costafox Posted June 3, 2008 #14 Share Posted June 3, 2008 The lunch was barbecued chicken with jacket potatoes and coleslaw. There were doughnuts for dessert. It wasn't a substancial meal but it was well cooked and tasty. Best Wishes Gill
SFO-F/A Posted June 4, 2008 #15 Share Posted June 4, 2008 On our cruise to Alaska in May, We took Chilhoot's #2 tour, loved it, the guide, the lunch, everything. Our best tour in Alaska. Provb3110 Posted June 4, 2008 #16 Share Posted June 4, 2008 For those of you who went to Emerald Lake, did you think it was worth it to go up instead of going right back down at White Pass? I'm trying to decide which tour to take.
Swabbie Posted June 4, 2008 #17 Share Posted June 4, 2008 But I have one of those close to home in Calgary as well. I though the other interesting thing was the desert just the far side of Carcross. It is quite amazing to see the combination of environments from Skagway to the White Pass right up to Emerald Lake.

vbmom87 Posted June 5, 2008 #21 Share Posted June 5, 2008 I also tried to book the #2 package from Chilkoot but they're sold out on my date of arrival. Are there any other tour companies in the area doing the same thing? have you checked your cruiseline tour? they usually offer something similar. however, your bus transport will be on a big tour bus rather than the smaller buses that Chilkoot uses. Last year I do recall reading that the cruiseline tours don't typically go to Emerald Lake. However, I also remember reading that some of the bus drivers did elect to go that far. However, I don't think you can plan on it as a for sure thing. The Holland trip does not mention going to Emerald Lake in its description.
