Looking for cool things to do in Bacalar

Ever since visting Xcalac for 5 days, back in March 2003, I've regreted not venturing out to see Bacalar. (We were way too relaxed to leave Xcalac) Now is my chance. I would like to have some ideas of things we could do there, besides Cenote Azul and lunch there, this is a must do. Is there any good way to explore the lagoon? Can you see it from town? I would also like to go to Fort San Felipe. Is it open to the public? Do they charge? I would love to hear more about Bacalar and find something truely memorable to take my friends to. If anyone has any good suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.
