shonuf Posted June 17, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2008 Recently, I re-established contact with a CC friend who I met via our roll call from a cruise in 2006. He sent me an e-mail that said he had lost my e-mail for a while and had looked at my CC profile to try to find it. Let me back up now. About 10 years ago, DH and I bought a hot air balloon shaped like a popular child's toy and had a web site that matched the name (see avatar). About 4 years ago we sold the balloon to another family but they chose not to use the web-site. When my friend went to my old web-site, it is now a site for adult toys!!! So if anyone from CC has tried to contact me and found the adult site, I am so sorry. I had forgotten all about the site being part of my profile. That is definitely not who I am. (Yes, I fixed the problem first thing). I know this is not really HAL related but I would hate to have offended anyone on this board. :(
jhannah Posted June 17, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2008 That's amazing! There's a very prominent U.S. Government building with a dot gov website ... and the same name dot com is a site like you mention. O.T. - I was a balloon pilot for 14 years back when we lived in Arkansas.
Druke I Posted June 17, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 17, 2008 Yes it does happen. One of the popular websites for ships' bridge cams has a web address that if mistyped leads to a porno site.
RuthC Posted June 17, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 17, 2008 Yes it does happen. Sure does. In my professional life I worked for a government department. They sent me for training to learn how to use a computer, since I was going to need it in my work. As part of the training we were led to a particular website; funny, what was on my screen was nothing like was displayed on the projector. I had typed the number "zero" instead of the letter "oh", and found my way into a porn site. And couldn't get out! Every time I clicked the little "x" box to close down it went deeper and deeper into the porn. With government property! :o I thought I was going to get fired. I later learned the porn sites do that deliberately---use a similar URL, that is. So, happens to the best of us, shonuf. ;)
Susie51 Posted June 17, 2008 #5 Share Posted June 17, 2008 Shortly after I started cruising regularly, I put the word "cruise" into yahoo search. I clicked on one of the websites and it was a porno site. Now I read the little paragraphs below the Big blue underlined words before clicking. Crusing Bob Posted June 17, 2008 #7 Share Posted June 17, 2008 Jim, we live in Hot Springs. What company had a hot air ballon in AR? We have lived in a number of states and Louisville before moving back to AR. Louisville is very big on hot air ballons and especially at Derby time. trvlcrzy Posted June 17, 2008 #9 Share Posted June 17, 2008 Jim, I found it very funny that when my parents lived in OH, the phone book listed some "helpful" web addresses for government sites and services. They mistakenly used the *.com domain instead of *.gov ... Imagine the kids working on those elementary school projects. WOW. I used to teach computer skills classes to middle schoolers. When the Internet was "new" (when did THAT happen?), I had to videotape myself to show students a lot of the possible adventures on the net. We didn't even had Internet access at the school AT ALL. We also didn't have hard drives on the computers, and each had a whopping 4MB of RAM. I wanted to show the students the White House Christmas card... yikes. I had to rewind and videotape over that one... since I mistyped the address using the *.com domain.
jhannah Posted June 17, 2008 #10 Share Posted June 17, 2008 What company had a hot air ballon in AR? Balloons of Mid-America, Fort Smith.
shonuf Posted June 17, 2008 Author #11 Share Posted June 17, 2008 Balloons of Mid-America, Fort Smith. Jim, I just finished a 76 page photo book of our balloon adventures since 1979. I had to go back through boxes of photos, and photo albums and scan the photos into the computer. The book was truly a labor of love and it's so much fun to go through it and remember when! You might even recognize some of the folks in it.
judynorth Posted June 18, 2008 #12 Share Posted June 18, 2008 I am the webmaster of my church website and at one time someone hijacked our site so that when you searched for the church site by name, the first link that came up on Google was a porn site. One person was all over me about that thinking that I was responsible. It took a lot of talking to calm her down and convince her that I had nothing to do with what happened. The problem was resolved quickly and it never happened again but it sure caused a stir for a little while.
Crusing Bob Posted June 18, 2008 #13 Share Posted June 18, 2008 Nedra, we had a beautiful corner lot in Tarragona and had it from the opening of HSV('69 or '70) but I decided to sell it a few years ago because we built on the south end of Lake Hamilton.
