Chosing a cabin...need suggestions please

If we cruise East to West (Atlantic to Pacific) which side of the ship would be our best bet for a balcony cabin?

Also wouldn't it be best to have a balcony that gets shade in the afternoon? We plan to sail in December '05.

Thanks for your opinions.

No one knows until the day of passage (or the night before), whether you'll be in the left lane or the right lane of the canal, so if you are interested in the mechanics of the canal, side of ship isn't important.

If there are specific things on land that are of interest to you (old army bases, natural resources, etc), then you might want to decide which side to be on based on that.

We have an aft Suite on our upcoming Panama Canal cruise. We told our waiter that during our summer Mariner cruise and he said stay on your balcony, order room service all day and enjoy the day and scenery.

I've heard from others that they went to the helipad on the front of the ship and watched from there.
