Progresso and Cozumel Family Activities

This will be our 2nd time to bring the kids to Mexico on Carnival and are looking for child friendly activities. First time we were unable to go to progresso and in Cozumel we did the submarine (which was pretty cool).

Kids are ACTIVE ages 3, 6 and 12... I'm thinking chakanab (sp?). Any thoughts or suggestions. Would love to hear!

p.s. Since we are going during active hurricane season (august 16) we usually book through cruise line - just in case of port cancellation... so any other ideas would be great. Lemme know.

Thanks!

In Progreso there is a free beach at the end of the pier that has swimmable water. Banana boat rides are available. Lounge chairs and palapa huts are available. Restaurants and shopping are across the street from the beach.

There is also a city tour on a bus for $2/person that is recommended.

We loved Chankanaab park, and they have a dolphin program there that you can book on site if you decide to do it. We went with another family, and all of us found things to do that we enjoyed.

In Progreso, when we were there, the weather wasn't very nice, so we didn't get to do any beach stuff, but if you go to the market (walk straight up from the pier), they have a double decker bus tour of the town for $2 per person. We thought it was fun and got to see the whole town, which was quite interesting, since they're really not as developed as some other ports.

In Progreso, you might want to consider Dzibultchun (sp?). It's a really easily accessible and manageable introduction to ruins. Relatively short taxi ride - just grab a cab at the pier. The driver will wait while you tour the site. Guides are available at the entrance. We hired one who agreed to keep it to the highlights, so we didn't lose the kids, and he was great. There is a cenote there you can swim in after the tour (but you can only go in if you have the environmentally friendly sunscreen on - biodegradable.)

Afterwards, we had time for a leisurely lunch at a place on the beach with a wood playset in the sand within 10 feet of our table.

In Cozumel, have you considered Paradise Beach? They have a website that is an accurate representation of what you'll find.

With both of these suggestions, you don't need to pre-commit, or shell out for a ship's excursion.

Whatever you decide to do - have a great cruise! :)
