widehunters3 Posted July 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted July 18, 2008 Has anyone been to the Eagle River Nature Center North of Anchorage?? If so, please tell me what you did and seen. Would this be a good stop, not too far off the beaten path, to venture around for an hour or so? thank you!!
Chenega Posted July 18, 2008 #2 Share Posted July 18, 2008 It's an excellent stop and about a 10 mile drive up Eagle River valley. We live about 1/2 hour from it and go there often. Visit their website at http://www.ernc.org

widehunters3 Posted July 18, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted July 18, 2008 I see they have several trails. I'm thinking we would be able to stay for about 3 hours. We enjoy hiking and have gone several times here close to home. Can you tell me if you have a favorite trail or if one is better for picture taking?? Thanks

Our favorite is the trail down to the Beaver Pond. Another great place close by is Eklutna Lake. It's about 15 minutes from Eagle River to the turnoff on the Glenn Highway. The road in is about 10 miles through some very pretty scenery and the walk along the lake's trail is quite nice. I was up there a few times but the dirt road in was the next thing to a trail. Not too many people visited the lake, or perhaps even knew about it. The road is probably paved now or undoubtedly much improved. The Army used the surrounding area for training mountain troops.
Chenega Posted July 18, 2008 #7 Share Posted July 18, 2008 Oh yes, it is paved right out to the parking lot and the trail along the lake is quite wide. Still, not many know about it. They often charge a $5.00 fee but only if the kiosk is staffed which is usually weekends.
widehunters3 Posted July 18, 2008 Author #8 Share Posted July 18, 2008 Thanks, I believe when we visited Alaska three years ago we drove through and took some pictures at Eklutna Lake. We will be in this area Sunday and Monday! I have my fingers crossed for some good weather. I don't mind the cold, just hoping for not heavy rain.
