Formal nights..question

It sounds as though your more interested in WOW'ing him with the way others dress for diner. :p

She specifically said she dressed to Wow her "sweetheart" not others. You may want to re-read her post. FYI, the only "diner" I've seen on a cruise ship was Johnny Rocket's on RCI. No "diners" on Princess.

Dinner, diner either way you people are all interested on how the others look instead of just enjoying yourself.

Maybe if you cared about the way you looked, someone in your life would be dressing to impress you.

I do book a cruise line that doesn't suggest I stay dressed for the evening- Princess.

...then what are you bitching about? You chose a line that has a dress code, so abide by it....and stop criticizing those enjoy dressing for dinner. Oh, and buy some comfortable dress clothes. Maybe it will give you a happier outlook on life.

I've been reading this thread and am absolutely appalled at the way people are talking to each other. And over such a simple subject. It is lovely to see people all dressed up for dinner but if they want to slip into something more comfortable for the rest of the evening, who cares? I certainly don't! It's really a downer to see people who love to cruise be so nasty to each other. I go on vacation to be with people who are fun, so I hope you "naysayers" aren't on my cruise.

If you look through this guys past posts you'll find that he likes being argumentative. He said that he just does what he wants. He has told people to pack immersion water heaters and that no one checks the carry on bags. Both pieces of bad advice. I really don't give a rat's behind what he thinks or does but his "know it all" attitude may mislead newcomers into doing something that may cause them a problem.

This is never ending... Some people are just more comfortable wearing overalls or "wife beater" shirts....:rolleyes:

What intrigued me about your comment is the "wife beater" shirts. Is that a California expression?

Thank you for selecting my post on this thread to make your comment...but I think you missed a few earlier posts. I'm glad that you don't care if people change into casual clothes after dinner...but obviously some people do. It has nothing to do with impressing people or having no life outside of cruising....it has to do with enjoyment. "Fun" is a subjective word...just like "food."

I agree. Many of us try to give fair advice based on past experience. My only hope is that the newcomers weigh all of the advice and make a reasonable decision for themselves.

This thread has become like the others regarding dress. It is a constant loop that does not stop, only under another title name.

I will be sailing in 3 weeks for the first time on Princess. We are very excited to do this and picked Princess for the ports and reputation and mostly because of you, the members recommendations.

Everytime I go to a thread lately, it seems there is mud slinging. While it is always healthly for an "active" discussion, hasn't it go too far? Can't this cycle be stopped? Let's stay on the topic?

I received a wealth of information from this board and truly appeciate it. But this discussion seems to have taken it's toll on me. It has gone beyond informative.

Where is our moderator? According to the guidelines, discussion like these are not suppose to be tolerated and the thread should be closed.

Signing off to this child like behavior.

I completely agree with you. It piffes me off beyond belief that people can't have a civil discussion about dress code. I have no idea why it has to turn into this crap. There's absolutely nothing wrong with discussing why some people like to change after dinner, why people opt not to partake in formal night, or why others love formal night, but it always turns into name calling. Pathetic. If everyone would just mind their own business and really not care about what other people do and do not do, there'd be no problems.

I am not sure if it is written anywhere in the Princess literature any longer that suggests you stay dressed in that evenings dress code for the entire evening, but it goes back many years. Staying dressed for the evening is tradtional. Many of today's passengers were not cruising when, on all of the major cruise lines, dressing up was the norm. With the building of mega ships in recent years, the cruise lines need to fill those cabins. They are trying to cater to new group of potential cruisers. Many of the wonderful traditions of cruising are fading away, due to these new cruisers wanting things their way. I believe the struggle is between the traditionalists and the newer crowd. The good thing is that there are many cruise lines out there that cater to different tastes and wants. My only wish is that these people would find the cruise line that offers what they want, and book those lines instead of trying to change them all to be the same.
Have you tried Crystal or Seabourn? Seems to me that you would enjoy that much more.

You are assuming that I don't enjoy my Princess cruises...well, you would be incorrect. Eventually, I may try Silverseas. From what I've read about that line, I have liked. For now, I am enjoying my Princess cruises.

I still have no idea why someone would get dressed up for dinner and change back to casual for the rest of the evening. It's never made sense to me. It's so much fun to get dressed up and we don't do it often enough anymore.

Because I have to if I want the better food in the Dining Room, rather than be subjected to the buffet. Personally, I want to change ASAP after a formal night dining. I have to wear button down shirts, slacks, ties, and dress shoes the rest of the year in order to afford the luxury of cruising. Why would I want to subject myself to that on my time (when I am not paid for it):)

To answer the OP question, you only have to dress up for that finite window of time when you are dining (and for pictures, if you want). After dinner, I change into a nice pair of Khaki shorts and a polo shirt and head down to the Casino. I have played Poker dressed like that across from a few guys wearing tuxes. After talking with them for a while, one was good with wearing the tux, the rest were jealous that I was comfortable.

At the end of the day, it comes down to how comfortable you want to be, and how comfortable you are being "under dressed" compared to some others around you. Oh, one more thing, the wife does have a big say in the matter .... luckily, my wife agrees, or at least sympathizes, with my stance.

People will always argue about this, in part because Princess's dress code has been anything but static and can be a bit ambiguous at times.

In practise, it tends to be fairly loose onboard, depending on the Maitre D'.

Now, personally I've always been uncomfortable and overheated in formal wear - until I had a custom fit tux made. Wow! I'll confess I did have to take off the jacket, but it was during a heat wave. The pants were as comfortable as jeans, and the custom fit shirt felt like a polo. It also cost me less than OTR because I went with one of those Bangkok tailors who does fitting trips to Canada and the US.

I never knew how comfortable a well-fit suit could feel.
