Is ordering multiple entrees, appetizers & desserts really necessary?

I know this topic will cause a host of varing opinions, but I always find it interesting why some (very few actually) feel the need to order multiple entrees, appetizers and desserts from the dinner menu. I know people say they want to sample the different offerings, but isn't 24/7 food for seven days enough of a variety? It always seems kind of low rent to me, but that's just my opinion.

the portions are very small on most things. I like the fact that they're small, it means I can sample more things and not waste anything. Most of the food in the buffet during the day is unappetizing to me and seems more like creations made from leftovers (the only potato salad I ever saw had tuna fish in it...roast beef salad, what is that?). I would usually have a big salad during the day and wait for dinner. The fact that things were only available once made it nice to try a little of this, and a little of that. I understand your comment about low rent, but I, personally wasn't ordering multiples to get all the food I could get. In fact, my DH couldn't beleive I refused to order more than one lobster tail...

Let me tell you, NYcruise... when I am tempted by... let's say a chocolate mousse duo and a lemon lime souffle, if my stomach has some room left, I WILL order 2 of them because I won't have the chance to try them again later on the cruise.

It's not low rent, it's just that I want to try it. It's not because food is available 24h/7 that I'm going to spend my day at the buffet. In fact, apart from breakfast and the sandwich bar around 4:30 (and maybe a light lunch on sea days), the buffet don't see me that much. I'm saving my stomach for the dining room.

One of the pleasures of dining on a cruise is being able to sample different things that you wouldn't order or experience at home. I don't consider it "low rent" nor do I eat 24/7. Not only that, but if you happen to say that you can't decide between two things, the waiter will almost always suggest you get both so you can try them. IMHO, it's NOT tacky nor is it glutonous. I should say that I very rarely do it but if I'm tempted, I don't feel guilty for doing so.

Frankly, Im offended that anyone would consider ordering an extra lobster tail or favourite dessert as being "low rent". I doubt that I would take much notice at what someone else is ordering; its really not my concern.

DH and I have similar taste in many foods but when it comes to appetizers and desserts we enjoy trying as many as possible. I've been known to pick 3 appetizers from the menu plus a soup (normally different from DH so we can taste two selections), skip the salad (I can eat those at home) and then eat my entree and pick two desserts if I see two I like on a menu. DH often orders a dessert from the menu with a dish of ice cream as a dessert chaser.

Don't regard our eating habits on ship as over indulgence and are no where close to some cruisers we have come across on some cruises. Once watched a man at a table near us devour 5 orders of escargot, two servings of soup, two servings of Beef Wellington and then demolish the dessert menu - Now that's what I call over endulgence. BUT, in his favor, he did skip the salad course. :)

Can't see any difference in ordering more than one or two selections of appetizers, soup, entree or dessert in the dining room in comparison to the cruisers you find at the buffet heaping their plates in line, eating part of what they took then bellying up to the buffet bar again to see if something else tastes better than what they left on their plates.

We have never ordered more than one of anything, and never even order all the courses on the menu, but we HAVE been at tables where the waiter took it upon himself to bring several of each dessert, or appetizer, or whatever that HE thought we should all try because it was so good. :) That's always been fun. AND, if it is our anniversary, or a birthday, and they bring us a cake, we always share it with the table, or in one instance, where we celebrated a birthday AND an anniversary, we gave one of the cakes to the waiters, and shared the other. Those that have had them know they are tiny, so not much to go around. I have seen people order two of something only occasionally, and who cares? They dont do it all the time, just when it is one of their favorites..... I cant' eat seafood, so someone else can have my lobster, etc............. :)

Well golly gee, nycruise, I suppose we're low rent kind of folks. Any time I can get a belly full of good grub, I'll go for it. My missus even orded a platter of pasta in addition to her prime rib one night - don't that beat all? And to top things off, we took extra stuff from the buffet, like cookies and things, so we could have something to munch on when we were off the ship. We would sure hate to have to pay for the stuff.

Once we went to the Horizon Court in the late afternoon, took one regular plate and selected some cookies, grapes, cheese and crackers. The plate was not piled sky high (and we were sharing it). When we entered the elevator, a woman looked at our plate and said loudly to her friends "That's so tacky!"

We were embarrassed, but just wanted a snack with our balcony wine.

I don't NEED a massage, but I still get one.

I don't NEED two lemon drop martinis, but I've been known to drink them.

I don't NEED to gamble in the casino, but it's happened (have even come out ahead).

Lord knows I don't NEED extra portions of anything, but sometimes I get them anyway.

There is very little stuff that one NEEDS to do on a cruise. I certainly don't NEED to be judged for what I eat, but I guess that happens, too.

Catdancer, I would have asked the female dog why it was tacky. Especially after 2 lemon drops:D I don't see why you should be embarassed. Being a rude jerk is much tackier.

Knowing my big mouth, I would have said something nasty, right back to that woman. What nerve!!

After saying "EXCUSE ME?", in a rather loud voice, I would have asked her to explain what she meant. If I didn't like the answer she might get to taste the desserts.

As for ordering extra, why not? On our last cruise the menu had all DW's favourites on French night. She asked the waiter to bring her a little bit of all of them, with no sides. She got to taste it all, and really ate less than I did with one menu item. Life's short, taste everything you want.
