ChevyCruiser Posted October 5, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 5, 2008 Since oil prices have plummeted - down to $93.00 a barrel on Friday -I wonder if we'll see any relief from fuel surcharges? Probably two chances - fat chance and slim chance.:D
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 5, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 5, 2008 SLIM chance. The cruise lines sign contracts to get their oil. Depnding on when they signed their contracts -- depends on what the price is -- some signed contracts when the prices were high. They are stuck paying the companies those higher prices until the contracts end.
spongerob Posted October 5, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 5, 2008 It was prices over $80/bbl that started this whole surcharge thing. I don't expect surcharges to be reduced or eliminated any time soon.
paul929207 Posted October 5, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2008 I don't think the cruise lines want to be raising and lowering the fuel surcharges frequently. I think theey will wait untl the price of fuel stabilizes for a while before making any changes to the current surcharges.
Rare silentbob007 Posted October 5, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 5, 2008 I believe I read somewhere that if oil prices stabilize (who knows what that means), then they can eliminate the surcharge and add the extra costs back into the price of the cruise where it belongs. All I can say is ... I'm not holding my breath.
firefly333 Posted October 5, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 5, 2008 I got a cruise next April at $10 per day I hope gets lowered by then. That seems too much for today's oil prices to me, but if I wanted to go, then ya gotta pay whatever they charge.
DanJ Posted October 5, 2008 #7 Share Posted October 5, 2008 Probably two chances - fat chance and slim chance.:D Funny how those 2 phrases mean the same thing LOL
ab0si Posted October 5, 2008 #8 Share Posted October 5, 2008 I believe I read somewhere that if oil prices stabilize (who knows what that means), then they can eliminate the surcharge and add the extra costs back into the price of the cruise where it belongs. All I can say is ... I'm not holding my breath. An advantage (in addition to the ability to advertise a lower price) is that surcharges are non-commissionable. Scooter-n-GB Posted October 5, 2008 #9 Share Posted October 5, 2008 Like they say, slim and none, and slim just hopped on a flight to Rio, for which he paid a fuel surcharge...:p
cruiserbryce Posted October 5, 2008 #10 Share Posted October 5, 2008 there have been a lot of threads abouty this around the boards...I really cant see the charges being reversed anytime soon. Oil is still quite a bit more expensive than it was when the charges were implemented and with how unstable the industry is I would imagine they will be likely to leave the charges in affect
Go-Bucks! Posted October 6, 2008 #11 Share Posted October 6, 2008 I don't know about fuel charges, but I only paid $3.12 per gallon of gas yesterday!! Just 2 wks ago it was $3.79.

FUN33 Posted October 6, 2008 #13 Share Posted October 6, 2008 Since oil prices have plummeted - down to $93.00 a barrel on Friday -I wonder if we'll see any relief from fuel surcharges? Probably two chances - fat chance and slim chance.:D The fuel surcharges were put into effect when oil was in the high $60 range. Now that all the cruise lines have established this add on, it is unlikely they will ever recind it. It is a clever way to hide the real price of the cruise and make it even more difficult to compare prices. All of this works in favor of the cruise line. We have a better chance of the airlines dropping the fees for checked baggage.
