lovelife Posted October 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 8, 2008 It's open! October 8, 2008 Grand Turk Reopens After Hurricane Ike Grand Turk officially reopened today with the arrival of Carnival Destiny, the first ship to visit the port since Hurricane Ike wreaked havoc on the island last month. Port facilities were up and running, even as recovery efforts continue on the rest of the island. Carnival passengers had the options of relaxing on a private beach, drinking and dining at the Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville restaurant, swimming in the on-site pool, or browsing at a variety of portside shops. Many shore excursions were also operational, including the Gibbs Key tour, dune buggy rides, swimming with horses, fishing trips and snorkeling expeditions. The former hop on/hop off tour has been replaced with a post-hurricane island tour, which allows passengers to see the devastation and recovery efforts on the island. The excursion price covers the cost of the bus; passengers who wish to donate to the United Way's Grand Turk hurricane relief fund are provided with a pledge card during the tour. While there's no word yet on volunteer opportunities for passengers (as Carnival had hinted in a previous release on Grand Turk), ship staff are participating in beach cleanups on the island. The next ship to visit Grand Turk is Crown Princess on Friday, October 10.
wwinfl91 Posted October 9, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 9, 2008 Thanks for the update, We are dur to visit Grand Turk on Nov 17th as part of our Eurodam cruise. It is one of the islands in the Caribbean we had not visited and we were looking forward to seeing it. We had previously looked at renting one of the golf carts and seeing the island that way but I am assuming that may no longer be option. The bus trip and a contrbution to the relief effort may be the correct choice. We were hit by 3 hurricanes in Florida where we live in 2004 including Charley which took off part of our roof so we can sympathize with anyone hit by a hurricane. Have a great next cruise. TCIslandTime Posted October 9, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 9, 2008 Grand Turk can never be the same as we remember it: http://turksandcaicosontv.com/index.php Please consider donating: http://www.rebuildtci.com/ We're still waiting on roof tiles to fix our roof in Provo. Fortunately, we still have a roof - unlike many others.

I don't like this -- a tour so that cruise passengers can gawk at these poor people and the devastation that they're living with? And what happened to the passenger volunteer opportunities? It's nice that staff are helping up, but what about the passengers?
