bigwuhead Posted December 10, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 10, 2008 I'm sailing on HAL over New Years, and curious if anyone can give me the scoop on this excursion. It says submarine... would this be bad for clostrophobic people? What is it like! Thanks.
cobia2 Posted December 11, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 11, 2008 I took a similar excursion in Grand Cayman. I would say it was similar to being in a slow moving elevator. I will be in Aruba the third week of December and since I had been on the submarine, I took an option that HAL offers which is a partial submarine that doesn't go completely underwater but you can see just about as much. The second part of the same excursion is an island tour. The excursion is called Aruba Sea and Shore.
bigwuhead Posted December 11, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted December 11, 2008 The Sea and Shore was the one I was wondering about. I don't want to go in a submarine, but i'm curious what a partial submarine is like. Thanks.
ScottishMaid Posted December 11, 2008 #4 Share Posted December 11, 2008 It is about 5 feet under water. The deck is above water the whole time. You go down about 8 steps and sit in a seat by a window. Just concentrate on how fascinating it is to see the fish right there on the other side of the glass and the wrecked ship covered with barnacles. Take your camera and concentrate on taking photos. You are not extremely crowded in, just a single row of seats on each side. If you felt really bad you could ask the guide to go up top anytime I think. Rare Lois R Posted December 13, 2008 #5 Share Posted December 13, 2008 I was looking at this excursion as well..through the cruiseline. I am not claustrophobic and was wondering if any others have some input about it? Scottishmaid, sounds like you have been on it? Did you have a good time?:) I am in a pickle about what to do this time:eek: I was going to take the Masterblaster but its only offered at 9:00am and I am one of those folks would rather leave a bit later in the day;) I saw a couple of other tours...1/2 day Jeep Safari looks fun too. Anyone do it? I was in Aruba back in March and I want to do something different from "the beach" this time. I am sailing next month. I enjoy sightseeing and was also looking at "The Best of Aruba". Any input from other CC'rs would be greatly appreciated!:)
ScottishMaid Posted December 13, 2008 #6 Share Posted December 13, 2008 Yes we went on "Aruba sea and shore". I think "The Best of Aruba" is the same except for the submarine. I didn't think there was as much to see in Aruba as Grenada and Barbados where we also took island tours. In Aruba we drove to the lighthouse, a rock formation where you could climb some steps for an island view, and to an oceanside gift shop away from the hotels + the submarine part, which involves 15 minutes each way on a small ship to get to the submarine. So the tour involved a lot of getting us all on and off the bus and boats, which somewhat takes away from the fun factor. The island is very flat and not very scenic but the tour price was reasonable and we saw areas beyond the hotels. After lunch on the ship we walked on our own using the ship's map through the town to a little park, Queen Wilhemina park I think. There were lots of wild Iguanas running around. Rare Lois R Posted December 14, 2008 #7 Share Posted December 14, 2008 Hi ScottishMaid:) Thanks for the input. I will give it some more thought and look at some other options. I am doing the Sea & See in Tortola this time so maybe Aruba should be something else;)
