Rccl sells but will not let you use it on board

Some cruise lines will allow you to bring your own bottle to drink on board and some will let you buy from ship store and take the bottle back to your cabin. When will RCCL change thier policy... Beer at $5.00 ea. 2 beers the cost of a 6 pack on shore. Mixed drinks at $6 to $10 each. I have no problem with anyone making a profit...but seems a bit high??:eek:

I don't recall beer being that expensive, tho--it was more like $3 + change....(domestic) and our mixed drinks ran in the $5-6 range, depending on the "shelf" of liquor used!

In my experience they charge about the same that a nice bar in a U.S. city charges. I don't think you can compare prices to what you'd pay in a liquor store/grocery store to the price they charge - that is just not a fair comparison.

I think the OP is in a bit of shell shock. it looks as though he ahsn't cruised sinced 2006. Things certainly have changed in 2 yeras.

None of the mass market lines allow you to purchase from the duty free store. Celebrity and Holland America allow you to purchase a bar set up for your room, but it is at a fairly steep price. Holland has the most flexible policy for wine - you can bring an unlimited quantity when you board the ship and the corkage is $10 cheaper than on Celebrity.

Honestly, other than thinking their wine selection was lacking, their beer and mixed drink pricing was pretty reasonable IMO.

None of the mass market lines allow you to purchase from the duty free store.

 

Royal Caribbean allowed it in the past. However that went the way of the sommeliers and free champagne on formal nights.

RCI is the same as other higher end bars, as previously mentioned, and less than Disney World resorts, even considering the auto-tip. Carnival will also let you purchase bottle of alcohol through their gift department, but it has to be done prior to boarding. The markup on that is pretty high, but costs less in the long run compared to buying a drink.

do you get worked up when you go to bars and they charge a lot for beer and liquor...these are some of the most highly marked up items around...it is what it is and like others have said...as long as people are willing to pay the price they will keep it up

There have been several very high profile cases, where the US press as jumped onboard, over persons bringing their own booze onboard and then resulting in a death.

RCI gets sued, the mentality of it has got to be the "big bad corporation at fault" jury cost them money.

 

So, there was a change in policy. Don't like it? Then press your own representatives for Tort reform. Demand honest reporting from the US press. But this time is ain't the big ol' bad corporation who is at fault.

Hey I just went to dinner last night and my Diet coke was $3.50. But the twin lobsters tails were only $36, so all in all not a bad deal. I guess it depends on where you live, RCI prices in some cases is lower than what I pay in a decent restaurant.

We were on Freedom a couple of weeks back, got one of those huge cans of forsters for $6.50 that we split. Best deal of the week, they also had happy hour in the casino on various days with 1/2 priced drinks, beer and wine that was awesome. I do not think the drinks are expensive unless you are getting the drink of the day which was $8.95.

Royal Caribbean's prices are comparable to most hotels I have stayed at, sometimes they are even cheaper.

They have to cover costs somehow. When you consider those who wisely book early at the lowest price, then those who book and haunt the RCCL website for a price drop (to grab even $50), to those who bring their own water and soda on board, the cruise line has a certain "nut" they need to cover. So, what better way than what they charge for drinks? And, like others have said, they are pretty much in line with hotels, restaurants and bars.

But the bottom line is I could take my time to make it, or buy it ready made, it is my choice. No one forces you to drink the alcohol, there are free drinks ( non alcoholic) in the windjammer, and from room service. Nothing is cheap these days.

My point is prices are up everywhere, so it would be only natural for drink prices to also be increased. Or maybe where you live it has not changed yet.;)
