firhill Posted December 22, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2008 Please...... First Time Cruiser planning on the 7 nt Mexican Riviera cruise on NCL Star Party of 3 (20yo/55yo/70yo). Not into pools, dancing etc.. so most time out of cabin will be for eating/casino/shows/people watching. Very frugal...but not cheap. I am trying to find the Best Value for $$$. What cabin should I select?
johnql Posted December 22, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 22, 2008 Best value for the money? Inside cabin - either pick one mid-ship, low deck (4 or 5) if you're concerned about motion sickness or try your luck with an inside guarantee. Oops. Sorry, I answered and then realized that there was a poll involved and it didn't include the inside cabins. In that case, I would vote for the AF Mini-suite. I like the extra room and I think it will accommodate 3 people more comfortably than the other categories. Personally, I would skip the Oceanviews and go straight to a balcony if having a view is important. To me, an Oceanview isn't worth the extra money over the Inside if you don't have the balcony to go with it.
nealstuber Posted December 22, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 22, 2008 This is pretty expensive for the Star, you might want to shop around a bit before comitting.
firhill Posted December 22, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted December 22, 2008 I should add that is the total cost for all 3 passengers. Also, the lowest price for an Inside(Cat KK) was $955 so I omitted that as the OV Obst was only $25 more. Thanks for the responses..this will help a great deal. A Sixth? Posted December 22, 2008 #5 Share Posted December 22, 2008 Go for the nicest roomiest cabin you can afford. If money is tight, go interior or OV. The extra size of the mini will be nice with three over a standard balcony IMHO
jp2001 Posted December 22, 2008 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2008 If you don't mind bunk beds, you can go with an oceanview but with a balcony you will get a single sofa bed + 2 twin beds that can convert into a queen. I might be totally wrong but since 1 person is 70 yo, the balcony might be a better option if this person want more tranquility time that busy deck time. Of course, the mini suite offers more privacy (1 curtain between the double sofa bed and the twin/queen beds) and also more room. If you can afford it without a problem, it's your best bet but, from what I hear, I think a balcony is a good option.
InTheCruisingYearsOfLife Posted December 22, 2008 #7 Share Posted December 22, 2008 I won't comment about the "value" of an inside versus outside, since the inside cabins are totally unacceptable to claustrophobic me. As for balcony versus mini-suite, for the small differential in price you are talking about, it's the mini-suite hands down. We've done minis twice now, and our next cruise is a step down to a mid-ship balcony, and the only reason we are taking that reduction is because the price differential is over $400pp. Forward, side, or aft-facing didn't seem so important to us on our recent Mexican Riviera cruise. It mattered more on the Alaska cruise. Have fun. Re-edit -- I see you said oceanview, not inside; I guess I got thrown off by someone else talking about inside. Those prices for the oceanview staterooms look a little more compelling, and if money is really tight, you'd do okay with those. But if you can swing it, the minis are really quite nice, and again that wee differential between your prices for balcony versus mini -- it's a no-brainer for me. trish1c Posted December 22, 2008 #8 Share Posted December 22, 2008 I should add that is the total cost for all 3 passengers. If $1495 is the total cost for the 3 of you, meaning you are paying around $500 each, then OK for the suite, I guess b/c you will at least get more room. 3 adults in a regular cabin will be tight. I voted for the OV b/c I almost always go w/ the lowest price to have money for other things. Here b/c it's 3 people, hightest square footage will be your best bet. If the room size doesn't change between the OV & the balconies, the balcony isn't going to matter b/c you can't store stuff there & nobody can sleep there. OceanDreaming2 Posted December 22, 2008 #9 Share Posted December 22, 2008 If you can get one of the sideways insides, it may be more spacious than an OV or even a balcony. But, I would chose the mini just because it gives you more privacy (a a bit more space) over a standard balcony. On the other hand, a mini has a tub rather than a shower and a 70yo may have some difficulty getting in and out of the tub.

Good point, even thought the new 70 is the old 60, tub vs shower may come into play. But aren't there some mini's setup for handicap access so showers or easy access tubs? I don't know?
