Freight shipping- luggage

 I was reading on the TIP site the article about Preparation for World cruise and the person mentionned using a frieght shipping company recommanded by Cunard. I think that they were refering to White Star Luggage Service.

My question is about cardboard closets "the type one uses for moving from house to house so our clothes were not folded, except for sweaters, underwear and the like. That meant no pressing necessary at unpacking time". I called White Star and they don't have that equipement. Can anyone refer me to a freight shipping company that offers to pick up our luggage in cardboard closets?

I just moved into a new house and used about 9 of those cardboard clothing boxes and to be very honest, I don't think those would withstand the pressure of shipping via any service. They are far too flimsy to withstand the buffeting in the truck, and most definitely the handling at the airport. Those things would tear, puncture and break with very little force. Even though I used a major US moving company and those boxes were sturdy enough for moving, they really won't work for major shipping. But, just to get information, I called Fed Ex and DHL and asked what something like that would cost to ship. If it were cross country, a box that size, and of medium weight, would cost around $600.

i just used white star twice to ship my luggage for a round trip transatlantic crossing and found the service excellent. for what it would cost you to ship those cardboard boxes youd be much better off just using white star and then having everything pressed once you get on board. i also found the dry cleaning and laundry service on QM2 to be very good.

  • 1 month later...

We had garments pressed and used the dry cleaning on board several times on QE2 and found it reasonable in cost and properly done. We also had new evening wear pants hemmed (which we had purchased in several ports) - our cabin steward sent us a very nice young man who worked on the ship in some other capacity but was a good "seamstress". There is a self service laundry on board for washables. It is quite an "experience" to use the laundry as some of the passengers become very possesive and obsessive. Detergent, irons and ironing boards provided.

As I am booked on QE2 for two cruises in next 12 months, I was very pleased to read there were self service laundries on board, but searching the layout of the ship in the brochure does not show any laundtries.

Where will I find these, I will be on deck four.

Thank you
