Do you smoke on a cruise?

Yet being the key word...if and when that happens I will no longer be cruising.

 

I know what you mean. I can tolerate not smoking on a flight. That's only a few hours. But a few days at sea?

 

I am so grateful for the Atlanta airport. They have smoking rooms with lots of seats, inside, in air conditioning, or heat, not a cage like they used to have in Vancouver, that had no artificial heat/air! Get off a long flight and light up while your SO gets a drink of water, uses the rest room, whatever.

That's great sha88. I've been smoke-free for over 30 years now and I must say, I never miss it. When I think of all the health issues I've avoided, and all the thousands of $$$ I've saved over the years, I'm a much happier person.

 

My sympathies lie with the smokers, however. After losing 3 close family members to smoking at premature ages, my wish for everyone is to never have to suffer in that way. I still get choked up, not from smokers, but from the memories of my brother, a favorite uncle, and aunt who passed away with much suffering. I will, however, respect your wishes if you choose that path.

Wow, that is great, 30 years! I quit July 5, 2008 (once again and after smoking for over 25 years) and 3 weeks later found out my college room mate was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Still miss smoking, but every day it gets easier and easier. And, I don't want to jinx myself, but I think I will be okay on the cruise and will go to the casino, too.

X is probably having a lot of success right now by being the most stringent no smoking policy in the industy. Probably because they are getting a lot of the nons smoking customers that literally hate smoking. However I bet if all major cruiselines adopted the same policies that X has, there would be a huge drop in all of their revenue, even X's because they would no longer be the "only player in town" so to speak. And I know if that happened the cruise industry would lose our business. There is no way I'm going on a cruise for 7 days or more and not be able to smoke on my own balcony. I am sure there are many smokers who would feel the same way.

 

I am/was a real Celebrity cheerleader, but this recent no smoking on balconies rule has made me an inside cabin girl. That's why I 'd pay for a balcony: so I can go out there and relax with a book and drink and cigarette in privacy. That's a different feeling than being in a bar or on deck where smoking is allowed. That's not private. Our last sailing with X was just prior to the rule, yet I still did not smoke in the cabin. I always went on deck and found other smokers to socialize with.

 

Does any one know WHERE the designated smoking area is on a Celebrity ship now?

How crazy! I just said to my husband that this will be my first no smoking cruise and he said, no it isn't, you weren't smoking when we did our Alaska cruise, wow, completely forgot! So, next week is my second non smoking cruise, wow!!

 

To anyone who wants to quit smoking, I tried Chantix and that seemed to work after trying to quit many times using other methods including cold turkey. And, I just hope this time I can make it to my first year anniversay - July 2009.

 

I don't remember having any problems with smokers on our last cruise (first where I did not smoke). Most seem very consderate. We all have rights.

That's me. I'm a vacation only smoker. Enjoy it on the cruise and post-cruise' date=' go home and don't give it another thought until the next vacation. Sometimes it's just fun to be a "bad" girl. :D[/quote']

I'm just wondering how many non smokers are totally SHOCKED at these poll results? I'd bet the majority. I'd also guess that's why we aren't hearing much from the non smokers on this thread. They continuously claim how the smokers are in the minority, and how they should not be made to suffer because of the desires of a few. This poll is showing them there is certainly more then a few.

 

I'd guess that CC is made up of a vast variety of people from many cultures, of various ages, sexes, and economic variances, so they really are a random group (other then loving cruising). So I would think that this is a pretty decent cross sampling of cruisers.

 

Evidently, of the 20% of the general public who smoke, a LOT of them cruise! Guess we know why the casino's are so smoky now! :)

I know the figures for this poll have surpised me because it is not an opinion, but true, that in the US recently, non-smokers outnumber smokers about two to one, with much higher margains at some age levels.

 

I tend to draw very different conclusions than you do, however, about the diversity of those answering this poll. ANd while I was initially surprised at the results, and have no basis to question them, I think it does explain a lot about the behavior of some people on the boards and on cruises.

Is that just adults, or does it include every living being? There are children who smoke, too, so if it's just an adult statistic it's still not correct. If it includes the entire population it is counting babies, so is skewed.

I believe that the stat is every American over the age of 18. I think they use data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to calculate the number of suspected smokers. Which, as you say, is still not correct because alot of high school age children are smoking too. And I'm not too sure that the BRFSS is answered with complete honesty ...

And then with cruise ships you would have to account for the world population and there are alot of countries where smoking is more acceptable.

Hey, thanks very much. This is probably my 10th attempt and the longest successful quit so far. I had real motivation to keep this quit going and using Chantiox helped, too.

 

I enjoyed it too! But really feel SO MUCH BETTER now.

Since you are quoting me, I assume you are addressing me? Don't know where you ever saw me claim that the figures that people state about the percentage of smokers is an opinion.

Excuse me? An insinuation that those who smoke have poor behavior on cruises and on these boards? Wow, what a snotty (for lack of a better word) comment. I personally find drunks and unruly children annoying at times, but I'm not assuming that everyone who's comments I disagree with are drunkards or out of control children. Maybe I'm wrong though...at least about the children. They may not be children, but they act like it.

We had a neighbor up the street (we didn't know) but he was on that stop smoking drug (are ya'll spelling it right?) and he apparently went out with his girlfriend one night, lost it after drinking, and after she locked him out of the house in fear, he tried to break into the next door neighbor's home. Next door neighbor shot him dead, unintentionally of course. They (the people who knew him) said he was never like that before. They believe it was the drug and the booze, so be careful.:eek:

I think we are not hearing from most non smokers on this thread because the title of the thread is DO YOU SMOKE ON A CRUISE. Since the answer for non smokers is NO they don't bother to open yet another smoking thread, especially after how nasty the last one was.

 

I agree. When I read the subject of the thread, I assumed it was addressed to smokers. Meaning, do you smoke, or refrain from smoking. Non smokers don't refrain.

 

I'd smoke on a ship if I could. But my Brinkman smoker won't fit in my suitcase. Besides, I don't know if room service would bring me raw meat.

Why does everyone just assume that all smokers WANT to "break the habit" but just can't. Some people (myself included) just enjoy smoking. Why is that not a good enough answer for anyone?

 

That being said, congratulations on achieving YOUR goal of quitting.

 

Did I say that I assume ALL smokers want to quit? I don't believe I even hinted at that. There are plenty of smokers that DO want to quit and those are the ones I was referencing. There are alot of smokers that don't want to quit. To each his own but I wasn't directing my comments to that part of the smoking population.

The second question asks about smoking over a shorter peried, perhaps the last week, and yields a figure under 20% of US adults. They also report figures for subgroups, with smoking declining with income, age and education. The figure for smokers over 65 is roughly 10%
