RCL whats up with the smoking

Recommended Posts

just got back from the serenade of the seas. a wonderful ship and crew - the ultimate in a cruise experience. the only complaint i have is the smoking. the smoke in the schooner bar, sports bar and casino was thick and uncomfortable. after being on the grandeur in feb which was smoke free this was a bit of a shock. i thought all the ships were smoke free (except for the open decks) and was quite disappointed that the serenade was not. that being said i would book it again in a heartbeat

Hi,

RCCL does not have any smoke free ships. People can smoke in the bars, lounges, (on one side) in their cabins, etc.

The off limits places are the dining rooms, the theatre, Windjammer and several other places.

Carnival was the only company to have a non smoking ship, and it has, or will, sail it's last sailing because of a lack of people booking.

i remember sitting in the schooner on the granduer and watching people walk outside onto deck five to smoke - that is why i thought it was smoke free. i dont ever recall seeing an ash tray on the granduer and they were readily available on the serenade.

chuck and phyllis dont mean to slam smokers - they have the right to smoke - maybe the solution would be to have some of the bars smoking and some smoke free so non smokers could have a choice. the casino is going to be smoking no matter what

You were lucky on the Gandeur. Non of the cruise liens have smoke free ships. Even Carnival's Paraidise will no longer be smoke free when it is move to the west coast.

The port side (left) is suppose to be for smoking while the starboard side (right side) being non-smoking.

I found after 30 some cruises it means nothing. Many smoker just pick up ash trays and move to the non smoking side. Also smoke from the port side does not know to stay on the port side it comes over to the starboard side.

Like you being a non-smoker, actually an ex smoker for 30 years, I find it annoying.

I've got to agree with you...just got off the Majesty and had a wonderful cruise. But the smoking in public areas of the ship is sickening...it truly makes me ill. There were smokers in the lounges that held bingo and other entertainment we wanted to attend...trivia games etc. I hope the cruise ships follow suit to many restaurants and begin to limit smoking to outdoor areas. I know I'll get flamed for this...and I really don't care. Every night while heading to the show I'd hold my breath through the Schooner and walk reeeeaaaalllll fast...lol.

Slam away if you want to because we too believe that there should be smoke free lounges aboard ship. What I meant by "Here we go again" is that every month or so, the topic emerges and the war begins.

Well I am a smoker, and I definitely don't mind going outside to smoke. I do so at work and even in my own home. Cigarette smoke smells, especially American Cigarettes and I sure hope our stateroom doesn't stink like smoke. Are there any suggestions on what to do if your room stinks like smoke? Any deoderizer suggestions? Do the cabin attendants deoderize using a cigarette eliminating deoderizer?

We are both smokers and don't smoke in our home nor in our cars. We simply smoke outside or in the garage. We do not allow anyone to smoke in our home, and before the smokers come over we let them know they will have to smoke outside.

When we cruise we do not smoke in our room. We smoke on the balcony because I cannot stand the smell of the cigarette smoke.

In our city you cannot smoke in restaurants nor any bars, so I am used to restrictions in public places, so none of this bothers me. Unless of course I was told I could not smoke on the ship, period. I just wouldn't take that cruiseline.

Just my 2 cents. icon_biggrin.gif

If you really consider the amount of square footage on a cruise ship where smoking is allowed versus not allowed, it is really quite small, so just stay away from these areas!! The smoking areas in the clubs, etc. are very small and usually tucked away, not hard to avoid. I find it hard to believe that someone on the other side of the ship on the outside decks could really be that affected by someone smoking the width of the ship away, in the wind that is typical at sea!!! If so, I think you will have a difficult time anywhere on this planet!!

Auroraknights:

Try Oust for a truly great room deoderizer. It's a spray and you give it about 10 - 15 minutes to dissapate. The room smells really fresh.

We agree about the smoking, but since cruising is an international thing, I think we're stuck with it. The European cruises are the worst, IMHO, because smoking is very common. We just move somewhere else on the ship.

Thank goodness RCI is strict about smoking in eating areas.

Ultimately, it depends upon whether people choose to be considerate or not. On my last cruise I was visibly pregnant, and sitting by the pool on the non-smoking side of the ship. The 2 women next to me decided to get up, walk to the other side of the ship, get an ashtray, bring it back to their seats (on the no smoking side) and begin to puff away. Maybe they were scared the chair hog police would confiscate their loungers if they were gone for 5 minutes icon_rolleyes.gif

Having a smoking area of a bar is like having a peeing area of a pool. icon_frown.gif

There was smoking on the granduer the begining of April. That's why most non-smokers took the Sound of Music side on the way to the South Pacific Lounge versus the schooner bar.

My TA told me you can smoke in the rooms. I didn't know that.. learn something new every day.

Nothng worse than being outside on your balcony enjoying the fresh air and your neighbor steps outside, starts smoking, the smoke blows into your face, and you have to go inside to escape it.

i'm thinking of a western caribbean cruise this summer...either the explorer or the mariner...just wondering...do either of the ships have a little black dinghy they tow behind them for the smokers like me, so as not to inconvenience the non-smokers? because i guess that would be the ship i'd have to be on...

What does smoking in a bar have to do with peeing in a pool? When did you give up smoking or should I ask when you stopped peeing in the pool?

Hmmm, I thought it was self explanatory. Having a smoking area in a bar does not keep smoke from drifting over to the non-smoking area.....just as pee would drift over to the non-peeing area of a pool if there was to be such a thing. Though I believe that smokers have the right to smoke, I don't believe that they have the right to expose me to their smoke.

I do not smoke...in fact I have never had a cigarette in my mouth, ever....I found it foul and disgusting even as a youth. I do however come from a smoking family. My parents smoke, and my siblings smoke. My mother had a lung removed because of lung cancer and my father has emphysema. After 60 years of smoking my parents are seeing the effects first hand and it breaks my heart. To watch these people I love dearly go through this is very difficult and to know that someday I will probably have to watch my beloved siblings go through the same thing is more than I can handle at times. And then there is the affects that being around cigarette smoke for 18 years may have had on my own health that I haven't seen yet....it's a little scary.

I happen to have a rather high tolerance of cigarette smoking and smoke....partially because of my family and partially because I understand how difficult quitting is. But, just because I am tolerant it doesn't mean that I want to be around cigarette smoke if I don't have to be. I avoid it as much as possible...and though it doesn't make me sick, it does make my eyes water, my throat sore and my hair, skin and clothing to smell.

Reggierail, I am not sure if you meant what you said as a joke or not, but I can tell you that to me smoking is not a funny subject.

reggierail - it appears you have not seen the latest warning on cigarette packs: Caution!, smoking can lead to pool-peeing.

It has also been linked to an aversion to toilet paper. The tobacco industry issued a rather curt, yet appropos, reply, "Bull****." An attorney for bulls filed papers (clean) in federal court protesting the link of bulls to the tobacco industry. Moron at 5. Oops, I meant more on at 5...

In case you didn't notice, there are non smoking areas in all the bars / lounges. The casino is a different story, I thought there was a non-smoking area there too, but on our last cruise I didn't see one. I'm a smoker and I only smoke in the designated areas that I am allowed to, if you don't like the smoke, stay away from those FEW designated areas. It's bad enough that 90% of the world treats us smokers as second class citizens, if you don't like it, stay on your side of the ship! Thank you for letting me exercise my rights, now I think I'll go and have a cigarette.
