Sunlovey--I hate to point out all the dangers of too much exposure to UV rays. Based on your user name and the location of the country you live in, it's impossible for me to fathom how facts and concerns like these can be taken lightly or disregarded. As a new former smoker, let them have their space. I might even enjoy some of that second hand smoke! Karen

Karen, you're a charm!

From Skin cancer society.org:

quote:
9. How should I use a sunscreen?
Apply it in advance. Apply enough. Reapply frequently. Use broad-spectrum products with a high-SPF. Don't rely on sunscreen alone!

Apparently SPF alone won't stop skin cancers. People who are 'sun-lovers' and people who smoke each make their own choices. We're talking about taking away the smoking sections of a ship. Let the smokers make their own choice (please stay away from the smoking sections)and people who are 'sun-lovers' can have all the deck chairs. It was brought up earlier in this discussion about having smoking and non-smoking areas in the bars and the casino area. I have had people wag their fingers at me because I bring a bottle from home to drink on ship. It isn't smuggled, rather placed in our carry on luggage that is easily viewed when boarding. I do this for two reasons: 1) I don't like the brands they carry, 2) I don't like the smoke in the bars so I drink on my balcony and then order a drink at dinner and the theater. I don't have to be exposed to second hand smoke for my lungs or my clothes(which I don't want to take to the cleaners because of the smoke smell.) I smoked two packs daily years ago, so I have had the looks and understand both sides of this discussion. Both sides are right in their thinking because it effects each side equally IMHO.

Smokers feel that their rights are being infringed upon. They get constant grumbling from most of the general public and the government is slowly restricting the area they can enjoy their habit. Because of the restrictions and the nagging, I think they have a tendency to have short fuses when someone challenges them about second hand smoke. Re: You couldn't keep a non smoking ship booked, put a dinghy behind the ship, stay on your side of the ship, rancid cheap perfume, old dried up skin. Smokers have also paid for their cruise just like the rest of us. They do have a right to enjoy and have a great time.

Nonsmokers have the right to complain about the smoke when it enters into their space. People have posted about illness in families and lives being lost because of the exposure to smoke. first hand of second hand. Should you flame them because they would prefer to not be exposed to it? Because smoke doesn't sit still nonsmokers are restricted from bars and areas like the casino and trivia games, bingo, if they are truly trying to avoid the smoke.

By avoiding second hand smoke as much as possible, I have missed out on some of the great music played in the bars. I love to play blackjack but am not going to sit in the casino with the haze of smoke. The cruise loses out on money that I might have lost at the casino as well as the drinks I would have bought. I did get to enjoy the Viking lounge one night as the air had very little smoke. Another night I got off the elevator and turned around and left.

Just a thought for both sides....Using walkie-talkies can cause noise that disperses into the air offending people around the user. Perfume, cheap or expensive, can cause people that have allergies to have miagranes or asthma attacks. Children using ship equipment for their amusement raises blood pressure.

I hate when I see such angry posts on threads.

OK... I am ducking now....just make sure it is rose petals or bubles and not rocks

God bless you and yours.

Yes, they are both addictions for some people...and can both have devastating effects...but, one is harmful to one's self...the other can have harmful effects to innocent bystanders. I've never heard of second-hand sunburn or skin cancer. What a ridiculous comparison.

I feel some people have no regard for others as they try to defend and downplay their addiction's effects on others. It is an addiction, yes, but a choice...smokers choose to smoke. They choose to continue to smoke regardless of the effects it has on their health…millions have quit…including myself. They may say they smoke because they enjoy it…I’m sure that is true…but the truth is they smoke because they are addicted and too weak to quit. By not quitting...they ARE going to have health repercussions. That is fine. But innocent bystanders shouldn't have to worry about future health problems as a result of their addiction...period.

Sorry folks...there are few things I feel strongly about...this is one of them. Peace to all.

OK...my undies are still in a bunch on this one.

Getting off the smoking on cruiseships topic a bit here...but another thing that erks me is...the high cost of health care...which, in part, is due to people continuing to smoke regardless of the almost guaranteed future effects...lung cancer, emphysema, heart attacks, asthma, stroke....etc....which costs the insurance companies billions of dollars each year...which we ALL wind up paying for in the end.

Interesting information under What ITPC saves in Hoosier healthcare costs

In addition to the many effects of second hand smoke that we are aware of...I'm not sure if many of you are aware that being around someone that smokes, for as little as an hour a day, can increase a woman's risk for breast cancer...here is a link:

Seems to me that a lot of folks are mighty intolerant these days (about smoking and a whole lot of other things). I'm not a smoker, but can handle a little smoke once in a while, especially when there are a lot more places to go on ships and elsewhere where you can get away from the smoke, if it does bother you. I'm not sure why people feel they have the right to be rude to certain classes of people today (including smokers). Hate to say it, but it appears to be a typically American trait that I haven't seen in our travels overseas. A little civility goes a long way. Just my two cents. Happy trails. Happy cruising to all.

How about a long partition down the center of the boat?? Smokers on starboard, Non-smokers on port. I'd be willing to guess a lot of non-smokers would be a little bored over there on port, b/c then they wouldn't have anything to really complain about. BTW: my best friend and I took an air freshener with us and stuck it next to our air exchange. No one that ever came into our cabin even noticed that we both smoked in there--we even asked people about it.

That was uncalled for, Yes, I for one am in good health, I just lost lots of weight, I can walk jog, run amd climb and no shortness of breath, belong (and go to it) can you say the same? By the way, at 55 I do not have one wrinkle on my face. I know most smokers are the ones with the prune skin, not just sun worshippers (which I am not I am fair so avoid it also) it is a proven fact smoking ages the skin and every other part of the body.I eat a low carb diet full of veggies and fruits and lots of good things because I have chosen to be healthy. I did once smoke when I was young so I did experience the smoking. But funny thing is that ex smokers are often the loudest protester about smoking.

But all that leads to one question, of you are the considerate smoker, why so defensive? We are only complaining about those who are NOT.

NO you are complaining about those that smoke in their own car, their own cabin and in there own designated area...might want to reread the thread. That is why the smokers are angry - were not even allowed to smoke in our spaces. I totally uinderstand non- smokers dont want it in their face and thats their right but we dont want people in our space pretending to cough and rolling their eyes. BTW Dont you get it ...when you cough or do things like that IN OUR AREAS - it only makes us blow it your way

Boy talk about defensive. If you read it correctly you would have seen I said that if she was smoking in her car and not hanging out the window, then I would not complain. Being stopped for a light I had nowhere to go to escape it. But apparently you also own the air and have the right to foul it.
And when someone is at a casino table and comes over starts smoking I may cough because it IS causing me to choke. But apparently that is something you could care less about, and blowing smoke in someones face is NOT defensable under any circumstance. And I NEVER go in smoking only areas.

Suffice it to say, you can never drink & never smoke, never go in the sun, stay a virgin for all of your life, eat nothing but fruits & vegetables, and basically treat your body like like the temple of good health, BUT...

and I hate to be morbid, someone can walk out their front door and get hit by a bus tomorrow. I don't wish bad Karma on anyone at all, but I've seen plenty of unhealty people live to a ripe old age and plenty of healthy people taken from the prime of their life in my line of work.

So, if I want to smoke & am allowed to do so in an area specified for such, I will continue to do so until some Demo politician enacts a law that tells me I can't anymore. I try to be polite about smoking, and if someone asks nicely I will either move or put out my cig. But if people are rude, such as quasi-coughing or giving me a dirty look, I have no problem rooting myself in for the long haul.

Allrighty then..

another vote for the polite smoker.
Hint hint people...Polite means not doing it when you know it is bothering someone else.
You can't say you are a considerate smoker, and then blow smoke in someones face....
