Free Upgrades?

How do you all get free upgrades on your staterooms all the time? This will be our 4th cruise and every time I ask our Carnival TA about an upgrade, he acts like he has no idea what I am talking about?

Just wondering what the trick is.

Do you mean within the same category? Like from a low OV room to a higher deck OV room? Best way to get those is to watch the carnival site. Like today I booked a 6c but it has a free upgrade to a 6E on the empress deck. Other times you can catch sales that have better upgrades and can book an even cheaper level and still get up high.

If you mean upgraded to a totally different category of room like from an ov to a suite. That is mostly luck. Every now and then they'll need your room and bump you up for free. Other times they will upsell you. Offer you a higher priced room at a discount rate because they are having trouble filling them and have people ready to book your room if you move up.

Most of the time when people are upgraded, they have booked a guarantee. That means they book at the lowest rate for the category they have chosen (inside, oceanview, etc) and Carnival chooses the cabin they get. So you would pay a price for a 4A cabin on the lowest deck, for instance, but Carnival may place you in a 4B or higher cabin and this is considered an upgrade. It's somewhat of a gamble, because you are guaranteed only the lowest grade in the category you have booked. Many are upgraded, though. Really, the only difference in cabins is that you are on a higher deck. I think upgrades from one category of cabins to the next (such as ov to balcony) are pretty rare.

Personally, I like to make sure I don't get a cabin that might be over or under a noisy area, like a casino or lounge, so I have never taken advantage of this.

I dont think anyone gets upgrades all the time??? Maybe being on these boards and hearing some got them, you are assuming it always happens.

We got a small upgrade last time a few decks because we had a guarantee, but no upgrade the two times before that. It also depends on which category cabin you have booked. On the Conquest I had one of the special 1As booked, and the insides went down below what I paid. I could have saved money by giving up my cabin with windows to move to a inside, which technically according to Carnival is a upgrade, but decided no thanks.

From what I have read, Carnival is doing upsells now, and rarely free upgrades any longer.

Why give the better cabins away when folks will pay a reduced price to upgrade.

I believe by and far the free upgrades are mostly a thing of the past.
