Picking up essentials/Wal-mart/grocery/walgreens

We are flying in pre-cruise and staying at the Condado Plaza. We are taking a taxi there from the airport. I would like to stop at a Wal-mart and pick up some essentials. Can anyone tell me if there is one on the way or close by?

There is no wal-mart in san juan. There are 24 hour deluxe supermarkets ,with deli and wine & liquour, like Pueblo (has a pharmacy also), Grande (both in Isla Verde), SuperMax in Condado (has a pharmacy also inside as well), they have all you need. If you are looking for a Walgreens, there is one in Condado.

we are leaving from SJ for a RCI cruise. We haven't booked a hotel yet, but we would like to stay in old san juan. Is there a place for buying diapers and wipes in OSJ? If so, where and what hotel is close / walking distance to those places?

You could ask them to stop by the Walgreens at Av Ashford and Av Condado, only a couple block from your hotel. You should be able to find pretty much every thing you need there. Also, there is a wine & liquor store approx. across the street from your hotel (maybe a block east at most)

we are staying at intercontinental in October - how far do I have to walk to be able to purchase wine and liquor?

Also, I read somewhere that if you want to go next door to the Old El San Juan Hotel for dancing you have to pay a cover charge if you are not staying there - anyone know about this??
