nanatink Posted March 26, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 26, 2009 In my search I was reading that each step at Pompeii are very high to climb. I would really like to go but if they are as high as bolders, I may have to reconsider. How high are they? Is it a steep climb of steps? Anyone have pictures? Fblack Posted March 26, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 26, 2009 The curbs and steps are not that bad. The highest maybe 12" to 16" at most. They had higher curbs because the streets were used to catch rain water. Try this. http://www.thinctanc.co.uk/photography/images/pompeii_01.jpg http://www.thinctanc.co.uk/photography/images/pompeii_03.jpg http://www.thinctanc.co.uk/photography/images/pompeii_05.jpg
lisiamc Posted March 26, 2009 #3 Share Posted March 26, 2009 The steps aren't horribly high, about a foot or so, like fblack said. You will probably have to do quite a bit of stepping up and stepping down, though. I found the road hard to walk on because of the uneven stones, so I had to step on and off the walkways at every intersection of streets. Rare Hlitner Posted March 26, 2009 #4 Share Posted March 26, 2009 i agree with the others. The problem many have at Pompeii are that the walking is over a very uneven surface and it can get very hot inside the ruins where there is very little shelter. In cases where there might be a very big step, there would almost always be an alternative pathway. Hank
CathyCruises Posted March 26, 2009 #5 Share Posted March 26, 2009 Of all the things to worry about on a Mediterranean cruise, this is not one of them. Maybe a bit higher than normal but absolutely nothing 'to write home about'! Cathy

Koshlong Posted March 27, 2009 #7 Share Posted March 27, 2009 Super pictures! I've never seen Pompeii from that angle. Now I'm looking forward to it even more. But I definitely will NOT wear sandals!

Also have a couple with the ruts in them. One of the stories that I've heard was that they flooded the streets to clean them. Sounds possible. If so, where did the water come from? swalm22 Posted March 27, 2009 #9 Share Posted March 27, 2009 A good alternative could be Herculaneum which are not so crowded then Pompei and easy to walk its also better preserve. There is also a wonderful virtual museum and it’s closer to the port. We visit last year and made a flashmovie you can see on our blog.:) http://mycruise.blogdns.com

texancruzer Posted March 27, 2009 #11 Share Posted March 27, 2009 One of the stories that I've heard was that they flooded the streets to clean them. Sounds possible. If so, where did the water come from? Remember - Pompeii used to be a port city.....with the water right next to the city. Vesuvius and time filled in the area that now seperates it from the water. That is why it took so long to find the ruins - they knew it was a seaside city and where they found it was much further inland. Our private guide showed us where the water came to and where the dock tie-ups were for the ships/boats. I am sure they must have used salt water to flood the streets and clean them. Guide also told us that the streets were also the sewers....hence the crossing stones to walk on to cross the street. Placed just so a cart/chariot wheels could fit in between. Smart people. The ruts were from the wheels hitting the same spot over a long period of time. Wow....guess I learned more than I thought...... that private guide was worth the extra $$$$ :)

Alter Ego Posted March 28, 2009 #13 Share Posted March 28, 2009 The Royal Caribbean tour to Pompeii is noted as strenuous - apparently there are a lot of steps getting up to see the city (?) My mother is 76 and has some mobility issues. But, we can go slower. Did anyone else find this to be a problem? Sounds like this thread is specifically talking about walking in the city and not necessarily getting there. Thanks in advance! (Sorry - this is my first post! I hope this works!) Rare Hlitner Posted March 28, 2009 #14 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Getting into the ruins is quite simple and does not involve a lot of steps, but there are steps at some of the entrances (there are several entrances to the ruins). However, it is strenuous in that the tours through the ruins involve walking a long distance (we are talking perhaps 2 miles) Hank

tokyo Posted March 28, 2009 #19 Share Posted March 28, 2009 Happy to see you like the photo's. We had a great time and found it very interesting. It's a silly thing to say, but don't forget to take a bottle of water with you. It can be very hot and a sip of water will help make those steps not so high

beyoung Posted March 28, 2009 #23 Share Posted March 28, 2009 The only real obsticles are the stepping stones in the middle of the streets but you don't have to walk on them really you can go around them. One thing if you are going when it is hot bring an umbrella for shade as there is none there and it was VERY warm last year. Definately worth it but hot hot hot! nanatink Posted April 1, 2009 Author #25 Share Posted April 1, 2009 Thanks everyone. When you really want to go someplace, and others suggest it is not recommended for someone with limited mobility. One likes to know before they go and judge for themselves if they think they can do an excursion. For me I can walk a couple of miles. It is my balance that is a big problem. A gentle hold onto my husbands arm is all I need to steady my way.
