Needing Help From Past Royal Caribbean Passengers

Recommended Posts

Hi.

In one of my graduate school classes we are analyzing the cruise industry. My group has been assigned Royal Caribbean. One of the items we have to report on is current uses of information techonolgy and recommendations of how they could utilize IT to better their current operations. Having only sailed the competition, I am unfamiliar with Royal's current onboard uses of IT.

So I am turning to the Royal Caribbean experts.

What are some examples of information technology being used onboard ship. For example: are they using interavtive televisions in the staterooms for excursion booking, or are they supplying maps onboard to track the ships current location, speed and estimated arrival time in port? As a past guest on Royal Caribbean are there any recommendations you would have on how they could utilize information technology to make your cruise more enjoyable?

If anyone could help with this information we would greatly appreciate it, and will be certain to acknowledge your thoughts in our presentation.

Many thanks in advance.

I wonder if you could convince the college to sponser a field trip. Even a three day RCI cruise would yield a lot of information.
Oh, my contribution:
The use of the sign and sail card when you leave and reboard the ship informs the ship who is on board and who has yet to return.

Work like a dog. Live like a pauper. Save all your money. Then Cruise!

They do have interactive tv in each cabin and you can book excursions, watch the ships movement, see current shows on the ship, book dinner reservations, check your onboard account( if you dare)etc. One can also stand at the peek a boo bridge and see the maps and where the ship is moving. Hope this helps.

I agree with yarlenna and mdeane on the stuff that is obvious to cruisers. But I've also gotten a kinda back door peek because I get IT related job announcements from RCI. Just in case I ever decide to give up my entire life to pack up and move to Miami . Mostly dreaming.

Anyway, they seem to have a pretty intensive top-notch IT philosphy. The types of announcements I get are for business analysts. Point of sales system analyst was the last one I saw. Also supply, human resources, and sales. You might check out their job boards at http://royalcaribbean.hire.com to get an idea of the types of jobs they are recruiting for for an idea of the types of technology they employ.

Good Luck!

I'm in the IT field also and truly was impressed with RCCL use of technology on the Brilliance. I think you will get a lot of reposnses telling you what they have, I will focus on telling you what they could do.

1. Put the daily Bulletin (Compass) on the interactive TV and allow sign up for classes and events from the cabin.

2. Put menu and allow selection and modifications from interactive TV. They do allow room service ordering off the TV.

3. Allow you to check for empty seats at tables to allow you to reassign yourself based on location. Give age and hometown of each of the guest at table.

4. On children's bracelet/seapass place a tracking device-so parents can tell where there children are located on the ship. I know many will say that this is the parents responsible to keep track of their children-however I'm really concerned that a child that wanders alone will be acosted by a pedophile. Also many children some how manages to go into every stairway that says "do not enter-crew only." Hey! Do this for everyone and just limit who each passenger can track/trace. In my case, I should only be able to enter my accompanying family members.

5. Past Curfew for the underaged in clubs-your seapass/braclet starts beeping. Also if you're in the adult pool and shouldn't be there

6. Instead of writing your seapass number for purchases use POS reader right at at the table-also use a pin/pascode with each transaction for security.

I would contact them and ask...I'm sure that they would LOVE to tell you themselves. There also might be alot that they utilize that is transparent to the cruisers.

We were on the Adventure in Dec. 2002. Beside what has been said before, they were talking of having the photos available for order on the in room TV. This would eliminate the pushing and searching in the crowd when the photo shop was open. I really liked that idea

Thank you all so much for your feedback! You have no idea how much we appreciate it! Your input as past guests with Royal Caribbean has been invaluable.

On a personal note, I love the ideas to order pictures from the interactive television and to put the daily bulletin on there also. I know I always lose that darn piece of paper.

Again many thanks, and happy cruising.

We were on the Explorer last year, and they have an amazing science station onboard. They analyze data about the water and about the air in the Caribbean. Contact RCI about all the technology available on that ship. You can even view, from home, lots of their data, but I've managed to misplace the web address (sorry). It was truly impressive!

I would contact RCCL's customer service to obtain a contact in the IT area. They always seem to find answers for me or contacts if they don't know the answers.

Good luck on your case study.. (I have an MBA in MIS - been there.. done that..)

-how about a broadcast over the ships PA system when minor's BAC reaches .001? Lets see we already have "Alpha-Alpha-Alpha" how about "Will the Parents of (NAME) please retrieve their child from (LOCATION)."

-how about if a underaged person utilizes an elevator more than twice in 15 minutes. The elevator can lock the child in and transport them directly to the brig.

-maybe if someone leaves lounge chair for more than (10,20,30) minutes, their stuff falls thru a trap door thus releasing the chair for use by others.

Also, it would be better for the environment. Think of all the printed pictures they must throw away at the end of the cruise. Even if I buy one or two, I bet there are 8 or 9 that get tossed. It might also allow for the cruiseline to lower the prices of the photos, which might increase revenue if people bought more.
