Never seen snow :)

Recommended Posts

This might sound like a stupid question, but Im from Miami, so I am desperate. Im planning an Alaska cruise weekend of August 14. I am curious if any of you guys that have taken these cruises now of a sure fire way of seeing snow when I am there. I am from Miami and have never seen it. So far I have seen shore excurssions that seem like a safe bet. Example, the dog sledding, but its $300+, Id pay it for the experince and to see snow, but I want something cheaper. Looking forward to possibly making a snow angel, snow man, putting snow in my pockets and getting pelted by a snowball.

I know some of you may be laughing, but I understand its the same laughter I share when I see northerners on a cruise amazed at the sun and warmth.

I appreciate any info.

Thanks

I,m going on my third cruise to Alaskan cruise(my favorite destination) this August 8th.
I am doing the helicopter ride onto the glacier and the dogsledding on the glacier.
Definitely don't miss this chance to do it.

Oh and by the way I live in the interior of British Columbia and it is 100f day after day sometimes here in the summer. It is 82f here today. We also get lots of snow. We have it all here when it comes to weather.

It seems funny to me that there are still people out there who have never seen snow!! I live in Vermont where we have 2 seasons: winter and July!!! LOL! Seriously, we have winter for about 5-6 months out of the year. Please remember that with snow you also have cold. I have never been to Alaska, so I'm not really sure how long they have winter up there, but if you want to see snow, that sounds like the place to go. I don't want to go there! I've had enough of snow and cold to last me a lifetime! I head south. I go on Caribbean Cruises. The hotter the weather the better I like it! It's funny how your geography plays such a big role in where you vacation. You probably can't wait to get out of the heat and I want nothing more than to be in it!!!!!!! Have fun.

Happy Cruising

You aren't going to see snow in August. Unless you do do a costly helicopter landing. You also won't be making snow angles nor throwing snow balls. This is hard packed snow that is ice like, not the fluffy white stuff on Christmas cards. They sometimes haul out ice chunks out at Mendenhall and put them on the fence? Are you going interior? Best opportunity there would be Exit Glacier or a trek with MICA guides 2 hours from Anchorage. For clairfication ave temps in mid August will range 50-70's, not freezing or cold enough for snow. Take a winter trip somewhere perhaps- plenty of places in the northern states.

Does anyone know how much the helicopter excursion costs? Thanks -

There are MANY different glaicer helicopter tours. The cheapest is with Coastal at $180 for a single landing. This is most all ice viewing. For more snowlike- you need a glacier dog sledding tour at about $350++++ Book direct with TEMSCO out of Skagway.

Tell you what. We can make a deal come next January. I'll go to Miami (probably will anyway ) and you can come here to Ontario. That way, we'll both be happy. Me - I don't care if I ever see that stuff again. BTW - I have 2 GDs that were born in Miami. They come home every Christmas and are only good for about 15 minutes outside.

i did alaska about 4 years ago...and the one excursion that i would have paid double for was the heli ride that landed on the glacier...it was absolutely amazing...but, as was posted earlier....its ice you're walking on, not snow...

I forgot to mention . I sailed to Alaska on the Rhapsody in July and it snowed for an hour at Mendenhall Glacier when we were watching the Glacier Calve into the sea.

We were in Prudhoe Bay July 7, 2001 and after dinner we enjoyed playing out in a mini-blizzard. It finally stopped snowing and the sun came out at 1:30AM

Yes it is. We were on a Princess cruise/land tour. The first week inland from Anchorage up to Prudhoe Bay then flew back to Anchorage and got on the Ocean Princess for the second week. Spectacular trip!

That is a once in a lifetime excursion! Did you get to dip your toes in the Arctic Ocean? I have a couple of collegues that stay up there all summer doing research. Some of them even went swimming up to their necks in the Arctic, brrr...that's too chilly for me!
