Carnival Conquest -The Drunk Ship Cruise

Sorry, but I immediately discount any review with gross exaggerations.

Every room on the ship was full of smoke? Hope the source of this massive fire was determined. I would think that an entire cruise ship overflowing with smoke would make the news.

An inside stateroom is half the size of one on Disney? Seriously doubt it. Carnival's inside rooms are 185 square feet. Are you telling me that a standard inside on Disney is 370 square feet?!

Thanks for your kind words! My daughter is Texan born and raised, but has two full bookcases of books by British authors, tons of books about British history, etc. She can name every British Monarch going back hundreds of years. She has studied abroad in London, traveled there for Senior trip instead of the beach, and plans to do her college abroad studies in the UK. She is such an anglophile, I wonder if she was a Brit in a former life!

I would imagine that she probably knows more about the English monarchy than the majority of people who live here. Before we arrive in Texas we are visiting my uncle in Charlotte NC. His wife is a History teacher and we are looking forward to her telling us about the historical events of that city. I have to admit that whilst in Texas last year we kept stopping at historical markers and were surprised that so many referred to events which are younger than our current home. We forget that the USA is actually a very new country. Here in the UK as part of the National Curriculum students study the Native People of the USA, The Kennedy years, Slavery and the trade triangle. However American literature is very much a part of the NC with students studying a wide range of authors.

"Embarkation & Debarkation:

These were both very simple processes. It was easy checking in, getting on the ship and getting off the ship.

On embarkation, the reps at the desk did not look like they were happy to see any of us, but I was the one going on vacation, not them - - so that is okay."

I'm at work, and even on my happiest day at work I'll never look or be as happy as someone who is about to go on vacation...

Public Rooms:

If you smoke and you like smelling smoke, you will love this cruise. Everyroom was filled with smoke. People smoking in the hallways to their cabin, people smoking in the elevators, people smoked everywhere without care or regard for the other guests. As an ex-smoker, I feel guilty for all I subjected people to in my younger days.

I'm gonna have to disagree there. I've never had a huge problem with the smoke on the Conquest, and I've been twice. I've never seen someone smoking in the hallway, but that's stupid on their part if they are. I've also never seen someone smoking in the elevators.

Cabin:

The cabins were small, the bathrooms were tiny, the beds were uncomfortable, the hallways were very noisy and the smell in the bathroom was pretty yuck at times. There is A LOT of closet space, space under the bed and 4 drawers for storing your items. The room also has a safe for your valuables. We had an inside stateroom. It was about half the size of an inside stateroom on Disney.

It's a cruise ship. Carnivals cabins are larger than many of their competitors. And it's not a five star resort, so no, the beds aren't great but they're really not half bad!

Fitness:

The fitness room was nice and clean. There was not enough equipment for all the guests.

Srsly? it's a ship of over 2000 guests and they didn't have enough equipment? For shame, Carnival! ;)

Rates:

We recieved a military disount and found that for 7 nights, this cruise was not worth the $1800 we paid for 2 adults, pre-paid mandatory tips and insurance. I am not cheap in any way - my vacations are always over 4K for 6 nights, but this was not a good value.

I'm so glad I know how much she typically spends on a vacation now. I was losing sleep. And for 7 nights, all lodging and food included, I'd say $1800 is pretty good, but to each their own.

Dining:

The food in the main dining rooms left a lot to be desired. The servers were fantastic and the entertainment, while not really that great, was funny for sure. The options and quality of the food was not that impressive.

The buffets were pretty good. In most cases, they were better than the main dining rooms. And they had a chocolate buffet - YUM!!!

The pizzas were creative. The burgers were all dried out and not good. A hot dog is a hot dog.

The Supper Club was phenominal and worth the $30 per person fee as well as the extra tip we gave them. I recommend the supper club to every adult visiting a Carnival ship that offfers this.

I actually agree with her on all counts. The dining room food is never spectacular, but you kind of know that going into it, I think. The burgers are usually dried out when I've had them, so I avoid them. I also agree completely about the supper club, it's great!

The overall value for the money - it wasnot worth the money we spent and we will never sail Carnival again. Next time we are going with Celebrity.

Anyway, it's sad that she didn't have a nice time. I do think the Conquest is a little bit rowdier, but part of that is that Galveston is cheaper to go out of. It's a central location, much like New Orleans, and people can drive easily. Cruises leaving out of Miami tend to be a little bit more and it's not a central location. I don't know, I hope she enjoys her cruise on Celebrity.

And, if they paid $1800 for an INSIDE CABIN with a military discount...BOY DID THEY GET THE SHAFT!!! I use my Military discount and can get a 7 day Balcony room for $1400 for my Wife and I (including port fees, taxes and included gratuities).

Same here. We booked Eastern iten and paid just under $1600 FOR A BALCONY!!

Cruisefan, I beg to differ with you on Galveston being cheaper to go out of if you are talking about cruise fare only. The fares are higher on Conquest than they are on Valor out of Miami. The only way for Galveston to come out cheaper is if you are able to drive to port rather than fly. I'm driving down this year because I want to save my airline miles in hopes of going to Alaska next year. But boy, I sure thought about leaving out of Miami.

Mudpie, that is an awesome deal!

Remember folks...the price of a cruise is ALSO based on what the PORT charges them to use the berth. The Prices are not universal. If you have 1 ship going from a certain port 1 year, and the same ship going out of a different port the following year, the "PORT FEES" charged to the cruise line for using that Port will be based on what the port charges to "BERTH" the ship there. That's why they call them "PORT FEES"!!

Well her name is Luv2CMouse and she raves about the Disney cruise line.

I live 30 minutes from Disney and I HATE IT. ABSOLUTELY F'ING HATE DISNEY WORLD AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES WITH IT.

The Disney Magic was anchored next to us in Grand Cayman last week and when their horn went off, instead of doing the typical horn noise, it played "When You Wish Upon a Star".

Gayest thing I've ever heard. I wish Disney would burn down I hate it that much.

Our first cruie was Disney and we loved it. It was so much fun waving at Minnie & Mickey mouse when we were leaving the port. Loved everything about that cruise.

I have lived in Texas for a year and I have as of yet met a Bubba, Betty Sue or a gomer!

Well, it kind of depends on where you live and where you travel.:p Being a Bubba isn't necessarily such a bad thing. There are many "country folks" here in Texas who might not be sophisticated, well-educated, or fashionable, but that doesn't mean that they aren't intelligent, good, kind, loyal people with great values (I believe the OP mentioned "morals") who are friendly and helpful. I live in the city with many educated, well-to-do, savvy people, and they could take a few lessons from some of the Bubbas and Betty Sues of the world in certain areas of humanity.

Out of curiosity, I quizzed my daughter on the British Monarchy. Going back to 1066, she named all of the monarchs correctly, in order, save two. I don't know WHERE that comes from, LOL. I wonder is she could name all of the US presidents in order. That may have to be my next test for her, ha ha.

I sure wish ignorant people would get their facts straight before trying to insult us Texans. KMart pulled out of Texas several years ago so it must have been those darn WalMart cruisers again. :p

Yippee! Then do ya think they will come to FL and pick us up at our Kmart to go on a cruise since TX no longer has Kmart? I WANNA GO TOO!

She must have been on a ship filled with people from my town because sadly, we DO still have a K-Mart. lol

You can hardly give this person a second thought because she didn't even list a valid cabin number. I couldn't find 7000 on the Conquest deck plan.

Sailing out of Port Canaveral, I too was having fun waving at Minnie & Mickey & Goofy, until my wife told me I needed to use my whole hand. :p

No, not cruise fare only ;) My point was for the most part, it's cheaper for most people to take the Conquest out of Galveston because of the central location and that many people can drive there :) The cruise fare makes up for a bit of that convenience, but it still makes the entire vacation cheaper for some because of the no flying, no checking bags and paying the fees, etc. :)

Jensing . . .when I found this review on the Cruise Critic UK board, I did notice the cabin number listed as 7000. Looked at the Conquest deck plans and could not find a 7000. Have no clue who wrote the review. .something "mouse" but it has generated some fantastic replies and humorous comments. As the slogan says here in Texas

Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with being a Bubba.

I am married to a Bubba and am raising two Bubbas....but I will say that my Bubbas know how to behave.

Oldest Bubba is a Chemical Engineer major working on a research grant this summer to cure Alzheimers! (4 year academic free ride to boot!!!)

As far as the smoking, I think the Conquest class ships handle it better than the Fantasy class now that Carnival has the designated smoking rooms. We sailed on the Conquest before the designated smoking areas (when it was in New Orleans ) and it was very smokey. But the Freedom and Glory did much better in this department now that the designated smoking areas are in place. We just stayed out of the disco and casino and sports bar and limited our time in the piano bar. As long as folks continue to prop their cabin doors open though and fill the hallways with smoke, eventually Carnival is going to have to ban smoking in the cabins to protect children from the exposure.

Of course, this is going to depend on these rules being enforced. I can understand the frustration IF there were a lot of folks on board ignoring the rules and Carnival did not do anything about it. But goes for all the rules...not just smoking.

Sounds like Carnival is just not the product for them. (which is fine) I don't ever want to go to Hedonism II resort but I certainly don't "berate" the product. I think there was a better way to express that Carnival isn't their thing without all the demeaning comments about the product as a whole.

Although, I will say that some ports do have a larger percentage of "bus riders" than others. And we do choose our cruises carefully. I have always loved the fact that Carnival was inexpensive ...but some do seem determined to make it "cheap" and there is a difference.

I figured that you were meaning the whole package for us Texans. I talked to a TA a while back about pricing & she said that since Conquest is the only 7 nighter out of Galveston the prices tend to stay up. My dh considered flying on Southwest, but by the time you drive to Love Field, check in, etc., etc., you could have just driven down to Galveston. I think the parking is not much different down there than at the airport. At any rate, I am happy to be able to take a cruise with the non-prissy people.

Oh for sure. It was because of that that my DH and I didn't get a balcony room last year and had an OV (same with our previous Conquest cruise). They definitely don't deal as much :)

And so true - the four or five hour drive is much easier in that case! Plus the road construction to get to Love (at least from downtown) would make me want to drive four hours to avoid it!
