July 25 - Embarkation

Welcome to the Live from the Tahitian Princess thread. We are sailing from NYC to Dover and back to NYC. It is 18 days each way with stops in Eastern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Ireland and the Faroe Islands.

We boarded the ship this afternoon at about 12:30, on a beautiful afternoon. The ship was at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. The starboard side had a view of Brooklyn, while the port side faced lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. When we sailed, after backing away from the pier, the Captain turned the ship, so those on the starboard got a great view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty as we sailed away.

Before dinner, we met our tablemates (friends we met last year on the Tahitian) for drinks in the Casino Lounge. They have a very good piano player there before dinner.

July, 26 – At Sea

We awoke this morning to the sound of the foghorn blowing every few minutes. At times it is so thick, we could not see the water from our Deck 6 balcony.

July 26 – At Sea

The ship slept in today. I went up to the buffet at about 7:45am. There was one person sitting on the side where I entered. It wasn’t until 8:30 or 9:00 that it started to fill up. We have a port expert on board. Today, he gave his first talk and it was very good. It was not a shopping talk like you get in Alaska or the Caribbean. For the major sites, he mentioned which tour(s) included them, but did not dwell on the tours.

Morning trivia was one of the easiest we have ever had. Four team, not us  tied for first with 20 out of 20. We had 19, but we knew the tie breaker and none of the people in the playoff did. As I mentioned on another thread, the Trivia Tippers are gone.

For those interested in the Suite/Elite Lounge, we have been invited tonight.

We had our Meet & Greet this afternoon. About 40 people attended. Hopefully, we will have a luncheon the last sea day.

Thanks, Paul.

I love the "Live from..." threads. This will help to bridge that moment of situational depression when I have to go back to work tomorrow. Now I have something to look forward to!

Have much fun at sea!:)

July 26 – At Sea

This evening was the first formal night, The Captain’s Welcome Party. It was also the Captain’s Farewell Party. Captain Ravera leaves the ship in Halifax and will be replace by Captain Kent. Normally these switches are done in the turn around port, but there was a big Coast Guard inspection in NYC, So Captain Ravera stayed on for that. He will be on Vacation for the next two months or so, and then will return to the Tahitian.

July 27 - Halifax

We have had fog since we left NY harbor on Saturday. The foghorn has blared every few minutes until we docked this morning. We went to Peggy’s Cove and could not see the lighthouse until we were about 50 feet away. Didn’t even try to take a picture of it. On the way back the fog lifted some, so we stopped a few times to take some pictures of the little fishing villages. We also visited a cemetery were some of those who died on the Titanic are buried.

We just had the RCMP Pipe and Drum Corps perform. The came on board and performed for about 45 minutes. It was not announced untl about 12:30pm today.

July 27 – Halifax (continued)

The sailaway announcement were made by our new captain, William (Bill) Kent.

We set our clocks ahead one hour the night we sailed from NY and another 30 minutes this night. This will get us onto Newfoundland.

July 28 – At Sea

We run into CC people all the time as we walk the ship, at the buffet and during the many activities they offer.

Today is the first time they have offered the English Pub Lunch. It will be in the Steakhouse.

We have not made it to the Suite/Elite Lounge yet, hopefully in the next couple of days. We get an invitation each morning.

Hi Paul,

Great to see you doing a live. What ports are you doing in Scotland and Ireland. We just got home from a British Isle cruise. We were in Cobh and Dublin in Ireland, Belfast in Northern Ireland and Greenock, Invergordon and Edinburgh in Scotland. We thoroughly enjoyed all the ports. Hope you do too.

HI, Paul,

Thanks for the updates on your NY to Dover cruise. What excursion did you do in Halifax?

Sure hope you'll get to QaQartoq okay. Would love to hear about the icebergs around Greenland.

I was looking at your NY to Dover itinerary and possible shore excursions this morning and noticed you'll have three Iceland stops and go to the Shetland Islands and Norway.

Have fun!

Martha

Martha,

In Halifax, we rented a car for the day. We went to Peggy's Cove. Then we drve along the coast, stopping for pictures several times. Then we went to a cemetary where some of the dead from the Titanic were buried. It was about $40/person vs. $49 for the ship that just went to Peggy's Cove.

July 29 – St. Anthony (continued)

We had a lovely day in St. Anthony, Newfoundland. It was cloudy and cool, I don’t think the temperature reached 60. Princess offered three tours. We took the Viking Experience tour which went to L’anse aux Meadows, which is the only authenticated Viking settlement on North America. It was about a 45 minute drive in a school bus (used for all tours). Then we spent about two hours visiting the sight and also a recreate of what the settlement may have looked like. Then we returned to the ship.
