mistybaby Posted August 25, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 25, 2009 Does anyone have experience using the new Mi Fi product/service from Verizon while on board? Are the data charges the same as they would be for using a blackberry or standard wi fi card while on board? Thank you.
gatour Posted August 30, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 30, 2009 While I am not familiar with the Verizon products you are mentioning, I would be very careful in using it onboard ship. Generally if you are using the ship cell phone "tower", you will be charged international data roaming charges which can quickly rack up. I have read one report where someone boarded their ship in Miami on Sunday and proceeded to watch a football game before the ship departed. His device had "locked" into the ships tower. He ended up having a cell phone bill of over a $1000 for the month. I believe he was able to work it out with company though. I have heard of other stories about iphone users getting large bills when cruising in Europe. I made sure my wife turned off the data transfer mode on her Iphone when we did our Eastern Med cruise this year.
