sendtodb Posted January 28, 2010 #176 Share Posted January 28, 2010 Yes, except for the fact that there could potentially be 5,000 other people at Mahogany Bay with you if two ships are docking there... Huge difference in crowds!!! Plus these other differences (HUGE for our family: - snorkeling right ON the reef vs. virtually non-existant snorkeling - wildlife rescue on Maya Key (huge plus for the kids!) - hundreds (thousands?) of pasty, drunk cruisers :) on a faux 'caribbean beach' vs. a (semi-) natural island with multiple uses/buildings, things to do, etc. Granted, the 'recreated' ruins, gift shop, and 'history of roatan' sites on Maya Key are not my style, but the snorkeling, wildlife rescue, and small crowds are worth the extra $

If you have a little extra spending money, then it is worth it to get away from the crowds. Not to add a guilt factor, but the wildlife rescue, including the cost of the veterinarian and staff, is paid for by patrons of the island. They do not get any money from the Honduran government to cover the expenses for animal care.
