Reduced port stays
This evening we received a message from O detailing revised times in ports for our upcoming May Lisbon-Amsterdam cruise on Marina — a total of 7 fewer hours in 6 of our 9 port stops. The letter attributes this to O’s efforts to reduce their carbon footprint, but certainly reducing expenses must be a significant factor. This cruise is a segment of a longer itinerary, so I assume there are also revisions to other itineraries as well.

While the prime motivation for this is not environmental, but controlling fuel costs, it does save fuel to be in port less time. The fuel burned in port for the hotel load is also burned while at sea, so that remains constant for a cruise of a given number of days. Next, the ship needs to get from port to port according to the itinerary, so the distance traveled is going to be constant, whether it is done slowly or fast.
