firstimersrwe Posted April 9, 2017 #1 Share Posted April 9, 2017 We will be in Suva on a Sunday and it appears that Sunday is a Church day for locals and not much is open apart from supermarkets. Any suggestions on what to see / do ? Thanks for any advice. Roy
Opua Kiwi Posted April 9, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 9, 2017 Head to the Centenary Methodist Church at 10am and enjoy the wonderful singing and the friendly locals. Continue walking south along Queen Elizabeth Drive to Thurston Botanical Garden and wander around. Check out any events which may be on at Albert Park as you pass by. Cross the road to the beautifully restored Grand Pacific Hotel and have a drink and some wifi on the patio overlooking the harbour.

Opua Kiwi Posted April 9, 2017 #4 Share Posted April 9, 2017 Mare is more problematic....on any day of the week. Normally there is only one excursion option, the shuttle bus to Yedjele Beach. While very nice, it is naturally very busy as "we" are all there. I think nearly all buses / vans on the islands are used for these shuttles. Last time I tried to hire a bike, but no luck. Apparently there used to be some but not when I was there last year. A real shame, as it would be very popular with return visitors. So I went for a long walk to work up for another week of chocolate desserts. Walked to the left from the pier for just over an hour. About every 10 - 15 minutes you would see a track down to the sea; most were easily accessible. There you will find absolutely lovely little sandy areas with undercuts in the fossilised coral rock caused by the sea. All with crystal clear water. Not another person in sight. Next time I'd take a towel and a book and sloth out in one of these nooks. Not much traffic on the road, but I always stopped walking as they approached as sometimes not much grass verge. If people keep asking about bikes hopefully someone will see an opportunity there again.
Rare Kristal Blade Posted April 9, 2017 #5 Share Posted April 9, 2017 Thank you very much. I don't fancy being with the crowds and a walk away from the crowds sounds perfect. Bike hire would be the perfect option so I will ask. One other quick question. What is the currency there and can I spend Australian $ or US $? Or even €? Thanks for your super speedy reply[emoji106][emoji514][emoji515][emoji507] Sent from my iPad using Forums
Opua Kiwi Posted April 9, 2017 #6 Share Posted April 9, 2017 South Pacific Franc ; CFP. The market at the pier, and the food drink stalls at Yedjele will all take, and likely display, price in AUD. However I prefer, if possible, to use local currencies. If you stop first in Noumea and are using cash, you will likely need CFP. There is an ATM across the road from the cruise terminal at the supermarket.

Thanks again, We will be in Noumea first so will get some cash there. We have a credit card which doesn't charge foreign currency exchange rates. Last time in Noumea we did a fantastic snorkel trip but just used credit card as we had no time for anything else! Catch a cab to Damodar City (it is a shopping centre) and have a bit of a look at a bit of local life, have a bite or maybe catch a movie (or buy some pirate ones). Tappoo Centre across the road from the market has a great view of the wharf (and your ship) on the food court level (level 4). It is a good photo op.
