Progreso excursion

I will be taking my parents on an Anniversary cruise in 2 weeks on the Elation. I am a frequent cruiser, this will be their second and I think their first was 10 years ago. I have been to Cozumel many times but never Progreso. Tried but to windy to dock. My dad is 76 and he told my mom he didn't want to do climbing, walking, or water....lol. I guess I should remind him he will be on a cruise ship.

My sister will take my mother and do some fun things and I will look after Dad.

I have Cozumel covered. My question is progreso. And yes....I'm taking him off the ship, it may only be a hour but we are getting off ship.

I've read at end of pier you can ride a double decker bus and it takes you around town. Has anyone did this? Or what do you recommend?

Thanks

We were in Progresso this past November. My understanding is that the dock & pier is several miles from town. We saw tour buses pick up tourists at the dock to go on their excursions. We didn't do an excursion. There is a free shuttle at the pier to the town. We did that, drove around the town, then back to the ship. The shuttle bus was very old, windows open, no air conditioning. But it was a nice little trip (about 30-45 minutes) to see a coastal town. There was a nice little Mexican market on the pier that was easy to walk to if you wanted to pick up some souviners.

Have you considered renting a mobility scooter for your dad?....he can go all over the ship by himself.....my husband was delighted I finally agreed to use one...safer and more freedom for both of us.....

Merchant43, check out the Progreso/Merida ports of call forum for lots of discussion on excursions: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=154. You never know, perhaps there are golf carts to rent or something your father may enjoy, and be able to do comfortably. (My parents enjoyed a golf cart on Costa Maya, 10 or so years ago). Have a great cruise! :)
