  1. We have never done NCL but just finished a cruise on the Legend in August to Alaska.  We are accustomed to the larger class ships on RCL and Carnival, however, we thoroughly enjoyed sailing on the Legend.  We never ran out of things to do and the ship did not ever feel crowded.  My son who was afraid he would be bored never was either.  In fact, we are going back on the Legend next year to Europe!  I think you will have a great time!

  2. Thanks for the information. Another poster mentioned that it does not move very many people at once and so now it makes total sense why the cruise ships would not promote it. I was wondering how much your cab cost and if they stayed with you throughout the day. I heard there are some nice gardens to walk around at the top of the mountain. I am trying to figure out how much time to plan for the Cable Car trip. How long did you spend there? Thanks again for the info it has been very helpful!

I believe our cab for 4 of us was between $60-$70. It included our driver for the entire day. You did have to pay a separate fee for going up in the cable car. We had a guide take us on the cable car and up to the top. There are beautiful gardens up there as well as the replica of Christ the Redeemer statue. We were able to spend as much or as little time as we wanted at the top. We went first thing in the morning and had beautiful weather, by the time we were descending it was very foggy. Our cab driver, Luis, then took us to the middle of Puerto Plata to look around the downtown area before we headed to the fort. We spent about 20 minutes at the fort as we didn't really care to go inside as there were many tours taking place. The grounds around the fort along the ocean were very nice. After that we went to the beach where we spent about an hour. We had a full day of fun and still had enough time when we got back to roam around the port of Amber Cove. Hope that helps!

  3. We went this past December on the Teleferico in Puerto Plata (Amber Cove)! We got off the Carnival Magic and just walked to where the cabs were and told them where we wanted to go. They took us to the cable car, the fort, and a nice beach. Much cheaper than going through the cruise line. We were back in plenty of time to catch the ship. I felt very safe doing it this way and would do it again if we ever stop at Amber Cove again! If you have any other questions, let me know! :)

  4. Crunchymomma, vent all you want! I have met many people on the Magic this week that feel the same way.

It isn’t just about missing Grand Turk. We are essentially on a Bahamian cruise and paid a hefty premium for it. While I have enjoyed the cruise, the fact that I could have went out of Charleston to the same islands for a half of the price really leaves a bad taste.

  5. We have done both the Oasis and Breeze, and each had their good and bad to us. I think for WOW factor you should try the Oasis. I was absolutely amazed when boarding. We could not see or do everything in 7 days that we wanted to, and I want to go back at some point. It never felt crowded even though there were over 6000 people aboard. The one thing I was disappointed with on the Oasis was the food. Yes, there were plenty of food options, but the quality to me wasn't great. I guess serving 6000+ individuals makes it difficult. Other than that, the shows and entertainment were amazing!

The Breeze felt more like a "cruise" to me. Lots of places to see the ocean unlike the Oasis, which felt like a shopping mall. I enjoyed the MDR experience better on the Breeze. The food was much better in my opinion. My son enjoyed the kids club and water area on the Breeze better. And the ports (which has NOTHING to do with the ship) were great as well.

If I had to do it again, I would want to go on the Harmony of the Seas (newest Oasis class), but would not turn down going on the Magic or Breeze either. You should pick the one that appeals more to you, albeit a hard decision if it were me!

  6. Just booked this cruise for myself, son, and parents. The Panama Canal is a big bucket list item for me, but I am unable to take 2+ weeks off for a full transit. So this will have to do! Can't wait. I'm just wondering if they will allow us off the ship once they have passed thru the locks? I know some cruise lines have excursions but not sure if Carnival will or not. Either way, very exciting! Now the countdown begins!
