  1. My humble opinion, I wouldn’t. I have stayed in the Haven on the Breakaway. Getaway is similar. While kids may be in the small Haven Pool, there are enough loungers in the Haven Sun Deck to fit your needs. Save your money, and just use the Haven Sun Deck. Also, Spice H2O is Adults only during the day. That’s at the very Stern of the ship. Of course up to you.

  2. I would like to use (less than 5 Watt) Amateur (HAM) Radio in the 144-148MHz and/or 440-450 MHz range. As a licenced US amateur I can operate in international waters and in many countries that have reciprocal operating agreements with the US. Other countries offer licencing for a modest charge. Especially the Cayman Islands. I understand that it's my responsibility to be legal in local jurisdictions. Having said that, I understand that all those (apparently legal FRS walkie-talkies) are not prohibited. (They're annoying on a ship.)

Anyhow, the use cases that I would consider are: (1) onboard from on-deck to other hams on nearby ships on the international (ham-only) calling frequencies of 146.52 or 446.00 MHz. (2) personal use to contact ham friends in foreign countries where I am permitted. This would be a lot of fun and should not impact the ship operation in any way.

Any advice on how to pursue this with NCL?

You would need permission from the captain of the ship to operate. This can be very hit and miss. If on shore, and there is a reciprocal agreement in place, or you have permission from the host country to operate, you are free to do so. Biggest hurdle is getting permission from the Captain. 73’s.... KC2JCD....

  3. Ed, on checked bags or carryon?

Checked bags. I listen only on the ship, as you would need permission from the captain to operate while on board. I’ve never had a problem, they have never called me to ask about it, or confiscated it. If security were to ever ask, I would just say you use it to keep in touch with friends who were also on the cruise.

  4. I have brought my HT with me on every cruise. I’ve never had any problems. Not even a second look. Both a Yaesu ft-60R, and a Baofeng UV5. I’d be unhappy if anything happened to the Yaesu, it has been with me longer then my first wife. If the Baofeng gets damaged or destroyed, I’m out $30.

  5. Just got off the Breakaway, wife had a liquid exemption. Best to put it in a carry on, and have a copy of the exemption. No problem once we showed the exemption, but security did say if it was a checked bag, they would have removed it

  6. NCL does not have Coke products, just Pepsi. So it would be a rum and Pepsi. But that has nothing to do with my questions so I'm not sure why you're saying to have a rum and coke.

Also, even though the UPB should be the same on every ship, different bartenders often make their own interpretations of the rules.

Ok, on that, we agree! First cruise on the Breakaway, we had an outstanding bartender, named Mary Grace. She would make whatever we wished. Wife and I would ask her her schedule, and visit her when she worked. Would visit her at Maltings, she would make us good luck drinks, and we would win at the Casino. So yes, bartenders do make the difference!

  7. Hmmm. I've only heard about having to order a shot for coffee with Baileys. What do you order a shot of for your Irish coffee? A shot of Jameson whiskey??

Since whiskey is an integral part of Irish coffee I would expect it to be covered by UBP. I'm surprised to hear you say it isn't, especially after Keith said it was. Who's right??

On both the Breakaway, and the Sky, every time I asked for Irish Coffee, I was told that it was not included in the UBP, so I just get coffee at the buffet, and get a shot at the bar... I'll try again in a week, when I'm back aboard the Breakaway.
