  1. I'm surprised of the absence of comments on air conditioning. For years, we were told to keep the door closed as to let it opened might affect the capacity of the air conditioning system to maintain a comfortable temperature in the stateroom or even in the entire ship.

With this new possibility of having an extended balcony the size of the stateroom, wouldn't the system have real difficulty maintaining an acceptable temperature not only in close by staterooms in which passengers prefer french doors closed but in common areas such as hallways? And what will happen when a vast majority of passengers will decide at about the same time, probably at the end of the day or just before dinner time, to close the doors expecting a comfortable air conditioned temperature when they come back?

Will there be pockets of uncomfortable temperature (too warm, too cold or too humid) here and there on the ship?

For me it is a real concern. But so far, I haven't read one comment on this subject...

  2. Hi!

We haven'nt cruised in that specific accessible Sky Suite but did in a "regular" S2 very nearby. It was very noisy starting in the middle of the night; a lot of carts were rolling (breakfast was being prepared) right above us and make it difficult to have a good night sleep. It appears that some areas are worst than other ones

We would never booked a suite guarantee simply to avoid receiving a stateroom assignment right under the Oceanview Cafe.

You might not have the choice but if it is possible try to switch to a better location. If not, bring some earplugs: it might help...

  3. Celebrity Reflection Cabin 2178 is located below the restaurant Ocean Cafe. We have not cruised in that specific cabin but did in a S2 on another S-Class ship. There was a lot of noise from the restaurant especially during the last portion of the night and in the early morning.

One short answer to your question: we would never book a suite guarantee simply to avoid a S2 assignment under the Ocean Cafe...

  4. Hi!

Four years ago we cruised to Bermuda on the Summit with our son, his wife and our 1 year old grandchild. The experience was a very good one for everyone!

We were able to grab two of those very large aft family veranda stateroom with a separate (with a door!) livingroom area and a supersize verandah. Try to get at least one of them, the corner one if possible as there is a hallway between the two doors that give access to the stateroom. A very useful place to store the stroller! The only downside was that on a M-Class ship it is impossible to connect the verandahs but we survived! On a S-Class ship, look for a larger verandah and for connecting staterooms as verandahs can be opened.

The verandah was utilized a lot: we brought outside the park'play, we installed an inflatable pool for the baby to have some fun, we order meals from room service... The floor outside is very rough and I knew that prior departure; so I packed a very inexpensive tarp to be used as the "play area" in order to avoid the baby to harm herself while playing. A very useful thing! We also bing a smaller inflatable pool ($1) that fit into the shower area for bathing easily the baby. Bring a light inexpensive pump to ease the operation of inflating those things.

Forget the whole pool area: it is a lot too noisy for a baby and plan your day otherwise.

On formal nights in order to let other passengers enjoy their evening, we ate on the balcony: it was a very wise decision as the baby was able to play in the park'play and appeared to appreciate receiving some treats from the table. Don't forget to order everything you need as you will receive only what you ordered. Eat the main course first (you can order two plates!) and then the salad or the appetizer. Believe me: lambs chops eaten with fingers are better!

We then put the baby to sleep and enjoyed all together the evening on the verandah or we stayed there alone while our son and his wife had some "time off" on the ship. Bring something that will able you to listen to the baby while sitting on the verandah.

When we had meals in the dining room, we took turns to bring the baby outside for a little while and brought her back around the table before her next "private excursion" outside. No problem at all and a lot of smiles from everyone around.

Prior departure, we had ordered baby food and everything we ordered was in a box in the stateroom. Bring everything else you need as you will not find any "baby stuff" on the ship and you cannot presume that you will find ashore what you need.

Four adults can easily take care of a baby and still find ways to have a wonderful vacation. It might look like you have to bring a lot of things but those little extras will make a HUGE difference in the comfort of everyone.

As grandparents, we would happily repeat the experience.

    Enjoy your cruise!

  5. I posted today the following in another post about guarantee booking.

Receving a stateroom assignment might not be an enjoyable experience if you book a suite guarantee rate and receive a S-2 assignment.

Booking a suite guarantee on a S-class suite could get you in a S2 on S-class ships right under the Ocean buffet floor. If so be ready NOT to sleep from around 3am as carts are rolling above you in order to prepare the area for breakfast... Are you really ready to receive such a stateroom assignment? If not, chose yourself the suite you want or book a regular veranda stateroom.

If and when you get such a poor cabin assignment, do your homework and hope that there are others suites in the same Category (another S2) still remaining opened and less subjected to noise from the upper deck (if there are some…), and call Celebrity to ask for a straight swap.

We would NOT book a S2 stateroom precisely for fear of the noise (not only for fear, but also because of our memories of these nightly noises coming from the floor above our S2) , nor would I book a Suite GTY in fear of getting one.

In as far as S1 are concerned, some are better than others and some have soot problems but the view is beautiful. The shape of the balcony is a little bit weird (compare to aft staterooms on M-class ships) as it is narrow, has a L-shape and walking around table and chairs is very tight.

Nothing seems perfect but perfection most of the time (not always!) can be associated with prices: with a S2 stateroom, whatever the "deal" might be, we will always stay away from that category of suites and, as said, for the fear of getting a noisy S-2, we will always also stay away from a suite guarantee booking.

When booking a suite guarantee, hope for the best but prepare for the worst!

S2? never again unless I could find one available not situated under any busy or tiled area... otherwise be prepared to be awaken at 3am or 4 am each night by carts rolling over your stateroom...

S1 again? yes, even with soot problems (not always, not on every deck apparently) and the size of the balcony (which appears to vary from deck to deck). Sleeping well is so precious...

If possible, consider booking a specific S1 to avoid a S2 assignment under a busy or tiled area.

  8. Hello everyone. I am new to cruise critic, however I have been lurking for weeks.

My wife and I decided to take a cruise for our honeymoon in January. We are both fairly young (late 20s early 30s), my wife really enjoys more peaceful activities and vacations, like the Homestead and the Greenbrier.

We are considering the Celebrity Silhouette.

I was all set to click purchase on one of the sky suites GTY rooms. They are offering it for about 1400 for a 7 day sailing over our vacation. The Concierge class is 900, and a regular veranda is 700.

My question is two fold, would this be a good sailing for my wife and I as a honeymoon? And secondly is the suite worth the premium?

    Thank you in advance.

    J

(sorry I posted twice, wasn't sure which forum was correct)

    Hi!

As this cruise will be your honeymoon, I would without any doubt choose a Sky Suite GTY.

By booking such a stateroom, chances are very high you will end up in one of the S2 Sky Suite situated directly under the Ocean Buffet area. You will be awaken in the middle of EVERY night by the noice of carts rolling on the floor just above your stateroom up to early morning when the buffet will be all set up and organized. In fact, I can't think of a better moment in a lifetime to choose a Sky Suite GTY than during a honeymoon...

Don't get me wrong: the Silhouette, when the stateroom is carefully chosen, is a beautiful ship! I would sail on her again but never in a S2.

In as far as the itinerary is concerned, that is a matter of personal choice but any cruise would make your honeymoon memorable.

    Happy cruising to you both!

  9. You could end up with any suite, so you need to be willing to take any suite when you book a guarantee.

Booking a suite guarantee could get you in a S2 on S-class ships right under the Ocean buffet floor. If so be ready NOT to sleep from around 3am as carts are rolling above you in order to prepare the area for breakfast...

  10. We are currently looking on booking a S-1 on a B2B cruises on the Silhouette S-Class but so far nothing but on deck 6 is available.

Those B2B cruises next spring in the Mediterranean aren't cheap but we are wondering if what appears to be true on papers - Celebrity's brochures - is something we should be wondering about: are S1 getting smaller each and every deck down? What about the verandas? Which is getting smaller: the stateroom, the veranda or nothing of the above?

I've already checked the "Sticky : S-Class Cabin Information Compilation" but we are not sure about the result of our overall search.

Is there anything we should be worrying at all?

We do thank everyone in advance for any replY

  11. Hi!

I sent an email to this hotel weeks ago and never got an email in rely.

I was basically looking for general infos on price and conditions applicable in June 2014.

Would anyone who had received a reply from them on those kind of infos be kind enough to share them with those, like us, who weren't lucky enough to get it?

    Thank you!

  12. Try this thread here on CC :

    http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1102608

If you can find this thread, you will have specific pictures of the stateroom 9162 and of the balcony and also a general picture of the entire aft. If you are looking for a less covered area, look for an aft stateroom on a lower deck as the veranda get less covered one deck at a time. I don't have the specific dimensions of the C1 veranda but Celebrity in a brochure mentioned 112 sq.ft. for the family veranda just beside the C1 (the corner one has a bigger veranda: 191 sq.ft.).

No one in our family has issue with motion sickness; so I can't comment on that subject but it is clearly not always the case when you go to Bermuda. The first time we went there, it was so calm that you could see flying fishes going in and out of the ocean and making, in doing so, circles in the water just like if they were playing in a bathtub...

In as far as the size of the table is concerned, I don't specifically remember what it was in the aft staterooms situated in the middle, now described as C1 but I do remember that in the family veranda stateroom they were bigger than the table seen in those pictures, which is however sufficent for two people having dinner on the verandah as you could also use for extra plates the smaller table (not shown in the pictures) usually used beside the lounge chairs or the regular chairs.

But on any cruise ship, there in no such thing as the "best veranda". The best one is always the veranda that fits your personal needs. Enjoy your cruise and, if you choose so, your day on Horseshoe Bay beach!

  13. Without a doubt I would choose an aft stateroom (really facing aft, not a "near" aft stateroom). The balcony is HUGE! There is a private covered area protecting you from the sun or the rain and precluding other cruisers from upper decks to see you, something which is regrettably not at all the case anymore on the newer "S-class" ships. There is also an uncovered area where you can enjoy sun if you decide to do so. In fact on those balcony you are the one deciding whether you prefer sunny or shady areas: it is not the direction the ship is moving to or the height of the sun on the horizon that influence your personal use of the veranda.

But there is also the wind. On an aft balcony, you are also protected from high winds whenever the ship is moving and that means that you can always go on the balcony at any time, day or night, without worrying about anything left on your veranda. Those stateroom are also great for any dining on the veranda as you have a regular size table, large enough for more than two persons if ever you invite others to dine in with you.

Even after having been solstiziced, those M-Class ship are what they are: ships being used yearly for nearly 15 years! Their "age" can be confirmed every times you will be looking at areas or furniture that weren't replaced, repainted or even simply more deeply cleaned than usual... We had booked those aft staterooms many times and would probably not be cruising on those old ships again unless we can get one of those aft staterooms or if no other newer ship of even an another good cruiseline is available in the same area of the world and the period of the year we would like to cruise.

  14. Thank you for having the very good idea to reply to yourself!

In preparation for a cruise in June, I "cut & paste" pertinent infos from CC on the scheduled port of calls and your post will be part of this very personal folio!

More people should do it whenever a post kept being unanswered simply because nobody has a clue about the answer...

  15. Hi! I must say that I am surprised to read some comments on this subject. It is almost as if some people are really happy to upgrade and maybe some will do it even though they might have been really happy with the classic package. It is almost something like rushing to pay more and the sooner the better in order to avoid a new future increase!

Instead of rushing to pay more, Celebrity cruisers should probably keep their classic package and start being very relectant to upgrade, as otherwise Celebrity will have very good reasons to conclude that there is still room for other increases. The only question the CEO will ask at the next meeting of the senior staff members and officers might very well be: in which area can there be a new "slight" increase cruisers will be rushing to pay as soon as it will be announced? Bonuses might even be given for the better suggestion....
