Here is an article about Costa Maya and what to look out for when going to a specific place in the town of Mahahual. I suggest you find out about Ketchikan. http://www.visit-ketchikan.com Head to the library Alaska By Cruiseship, Fodor's Alaska Port of Call, there is plenty of hiking available, along with walking areas around nearby attractions. Way too many to recommend one.

Thanks so much for the info. We are going 8/21/14 interested in animal and nature excursions with a smaller group.

Check out Wild Wolf Tours in Ketchikan for a great nature tour. It includes walking in National Forest with local native guide who points out a variety of trees and plants along the way. It is a great experience to be out in nature away from the crowds. Truly beautiful area. Also stops at Totem Park and you hear interesting stories behind the totem poles. The price is reasonable too.
