  1. We are 12 couples traveling from Miami to Rio next January. We arrive in Rio on Feb and disembark the morning of the 11th. None of the flights back to US leave until 10:30 pm. That leaves about 14 hours in the airport. Thinking we might like to find a tour. Has any one done this cruise? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  2. Hello Mia,

Sorry to hear about the complications you are having.

The flight booking operation for us here in the UK seems to use a somewhat different process as our airfare is rolled in with the cruise price. In answer to your question we have economy tickets and seats. BA have the aircraft configured with pairs of seats on the top deck in economy and by having our flights ticketed well in advance we could make sure that we got two of those.

In fairness to Viking I suspect that some of the blame for the difficulty you are having rest with the airlines and is a result of the complicated rules, restrictions and costs to upgrade that are applied by the airline to different sorts of tickets.

Whatever the cause we wish you and your TA all the best in getting it sorted out.

We are traveling to Egypt in October. Our friends were able to book on British Air with Viking in business class but we had to book on our own to fly British Air Premium Economy which also meant we had to pay for Viking transfers from the airport to the hotel. You only get free transfers when you use Viking Air. I thought this was a little crazy.

  3. I booked through Viking. Flew from Dulles airport in Washington, DC on Austrian airlines. Stopped in Vienna, Austria then on to Cairo. Coming back it was British Airways - Cairo to Heathrow airport then on to Dulles. There was probably a 2-3 hr layover in Vienna and at Heathrow - so there was plenty of time. Everything went very smoothly though the plane home was so packed it was really uncomfortable. After 12 days on the go and a cramped plane, I wish I had looked into upgrading.

Could you share your experience on the River Cruise?? Did you enjoy and did you feel safe?

  4. We did not book with Viking but got a wonderful flight with British Air. We are flying from Phoenix to Heathrow. 2 hr 45 min layover and then British Airways to Cairo. Coming back from Amman to Heathrow and then to Phoenix. We booked Premium Coach and will pay $32 pp for Viking transfer from Cairo airport to hotel.

  5. We have stayed twice at Holiday Inn & Suites before cruising with Princess. We like it and it is a real bang for your buck. They have a free shuttle from the airport and a shuttle to the port for $10pp. The port is not more than 15 minutes away. There is a free breakfast, free wifi, and across the street is a small shopping area but has 4-5 places to eat. We are cruising again in January and will stay here again.
