  1. I personally choose to steer clear of Deet:

But products with 95 percent or more deet have been linked with serious side effects, including seizures, slurred speech, and coma. It can also cause eye irritation and allergic reactions. Our experts recommend using no more than 30 percent deet, ever. If you’re, say, on an overnight camping trip and need long-term bug protection, reapply a product with 15 percent deet (such as Off FamilyCare Smooth & Dry spray) and use it sparingly. Each application will protect you from mosquito and tick bites for at least 8 hours.

  2. They have to wait until they're at least 12 miles from shore (it's only 2 miles in the EU). It's possible you may still have a little bit of signal from your home carrier when it's turned on so don't wait until the last second.

Thanks. What about for an Alaskan cruise which is near land the whole time?

  3. Thank you very much for taking the time to write this up. My wife and I will be taking the Crown to Alaska in 3 weeks. We also signed up for "anytime" dining so I found the comment below interesting. Nice to know you can switch, we'll keep this option open.

The “Anytime” dining didn’t really work for us. The service was terrible—the sensation was of the service staff throwing your food on the table and running off. They seemed harried, never had enough time to, say, check back and see if your food was OK, and just weren’t engaged with the diners. You have to make a reservation every day (via phone, and prepare to be on hold quite a while), and if you don’t, you stand in a very long line to be seated. About half way through, we switched to traditional dining, and the service was vastly improved: much more timely, more friendly, more coordinated, no daily phone reservation, wholly a better experience.

  4. My wife and I are taking the Crown Princess to Alaska this May and are asking ourselves the same question. Right now we are leaning towards the Green Jeep rental. We have lots of other excursions booked and felt like it would be nice to have one day just to ourselves, doing our own thing, at our own pace.

  5. I'm finding this a very useful conversation, thanks to all of the contributors. I, too, drink mostly water so this subject is very important to me.

As long as the water has no chlorine taste I'll be happy.

My current plan is to bring aboard a 6-pack of bottled water and refill these bottles daily and store them in the fridge.
