  1. Here's my 2 cents. I have worked in retail and customer service positions for over 20 years now. I find that the most successful employees are the ones that seem happy all the time. I know no one is happy all the time, but the whole world does not need to know it. I have a coworker that found out her best friend (since she was 5 yo) was sleeping with her boyfriend! She came to work the next day and not one customer knew she was anything but happy! She is an amazing woman, but still with devastation in your heart like that and being able to serve with a smile, she deserves a medal! We work at the service desk, so we get to hear a lot of complaints. We have some very rude, hateful customers. We deal with it with a smile. It is part of the job. I've been yelled at, threatened, even had things thrown at me, but I love my job. I have customers that come in often and I know their names, and a little about their lives. I have a terrible memory but it is important to be friendly and happy when dealing with the public. Yes our break room is filled with stories of rude or stupid customers, but it stays away from the customers. I think I would be like the poster that said she was trying to help the staff be happy. I would probably go into work mode and try to please them. 😊

  2. Dear OP

I know this is late, but I have just read this for the first time. Congratulations on your win with Carnival, but mostly on your win with your son. Three weeks ago my SIL was rushed into an emergency C section at only 29 weeks. Neither mom or baby were doing well. The baby was only given 2 days at the most to live and mom was fading fast. The gave mom a couple of transfusions and that really helped. Baby is now three weeks old and weighs a whopping 3 lbs 3 oz! Miracles happen and I'm so grateful to have this little niece in our lives, especially since her mom has been trying to get pregnant for 18 years, even tried all the infertility treatments. What a blessing to finally have a little one to hold. Of course baby is still in NICU but she is making great strides! Thank you for sharing your story with us, it helped me find hope for our miracle and strengthens my faith. May your dream come true sooner rather than later. God bless you and your family!

  3. Thank you for the review. We are going on the Inspiration in July for our 30th anniversary. It is our first cruise so it should be fun. Our kids gave us this cruise and set it up for early set dining. Do you think this will be ok? We don't have any excursions in Ensenada and we don't drink, how much cash do you think we should bring? Thanks again for such a great review.

  4. I'm really unsure what to do after reading this thread. My husband and I are cruising for the first time in July. While I dislike the idea of being on a schedule, I'm afraid my husband who is the worlds best procrastinator would wait until its too late to eat in the MDR or I would be nagging him to go. We are usually quiet and shy and probably would enjoy eating by ourselves, especially since our sea day is also our anniversary. However, at dinner at a big table is probably the only place I would strike up a conversation with a stranger. I'm so torn as to what to do. ( I also tend to worry too much 😊)

  5. Our kids gave us our cruise for Christmas. We are going to Mexico so they put a sombrero, maracas, a captain's hat, a stuffed fish, and beach ball in a gift bag with the itinery printed out at the bottom. It was fun pulling each item out trying to figure out what the gift was.

  6. First of all, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You have restored my faith in humanity. I realize that it may have sounded like I meant to lump all of the cruising community into one snobbish group, I did not intend too. I felt there were many on the original thread that were. I usually don't have a problem of worrying about what others think of me on vacation or even a business trip. This whole unknown thing is freaking me out a little. I have been reading the forums since Christmas when we received our gift. I like to feel in control of the situation and wanted to learn all I can before we go. I have learned quite a bit here and I do appreciate everyone's help. And to the teacher that responded, thank you very much. I believe educators are heroes! Thank you all again. I'm sure we will love the cruise. I really do want to go to the MDR on formal night. As I said it is on our anniversary and my husband loves prime rib. I, personally, don't eat meat but I'm sure there will be plenty of other things for me to eat!

  7. Wow! After reading Carnival's forum I was very afraid that I would become a cruise addict. Now that I have read this thread, I'm sure that won't happen. My husband and I were given a cruise by our dear children to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We were very excited and appreciated the gift very much. I'm am more than a little worried now that I have read this thread. Apparently, we are not worthy to cruise because we are not upperclass. We actually work for a living. We had planned on dressing nicely, but not formal, on Elegant night. This just happens to fall on our anniversary. Maybe we should just stay in our cabin and order room service so as to not offend anyone with our appearance. After all, I am plus size and I might make your meal unappetizing with my blatant disregard for my health. Of course, you know nothing about why I am fat, so it must be that I just don't care and have given up on looks. At least we are fortunate enough to be cruising on the "Walmart" of cruise lines so maybe they will actually allow us to board. We will be going on this cruise because our children thought enough of us to give it to us. Let me just apologize in advance to anyone we might be cruising with that I will so obviously will offend. I will try not to relax or, heaven forbid, actually enjoy myself. I wish all of you snobs the best of times on your so deserved cruises!!

  8. I read one post that said not to get them until you need them or the time would be wasted and that they knew far enough in advance that they would be able to get one.

This is not true! We are not rich by any stretch of the imagination. My husband had been out of work for nine months when he finally found a job. He was working in the IT department of a local plant. We decided we wanted to our passports. We didn't have any trips planned and couldn't see being able to afford any in the foreseeable future, but we felt the need to get them anyway. Not too long after they arrived, his company asked him to help out another plant in the US. Not a problem. Well that lead to him being put on a team that traveled extensively. He was going somewhere new almost every week. One day they asked who already had passports because they had an account in a foreign country that needed to be taken care of right away. My husband was able to go because he was prepared. All the traveling he did also built up his frequent flyer miles and now we are planning a European vacation for the two of us! My children got together and purchased us a cruise for Christmas. Neither of these things would have been possible if we hadn't gotten our passports when we did.

There really are surprises in life that you never see coming. Be prepared.

  9. It is published in Carnival's FAQ's exactly what the $11.50 per day goes to. It does not go to room service! Suggested tip is $1 per plate.

  10. They are referring to a Holiday Inn Express commercial. Where they make you think you are smart because you stayed at one.

That would explain why I don't understand. I haven't watched TV in years. Sorry, I know it's a pain to have to explain everything to those of us that are not in the know. I am grateful for this thread though. It is helpful to know what irks others so I don't do it on my cruise. Thanks for all the responses.
