Hi We were there in April 2015.  We did a paid excursion to St. Peter’s Square and the Basilica. It was truly a highlight of our Med Cruise.  It is about 2.5 hour drive to Rome,  Your bus tour around the city shows important highlights.  We entered the Basilica before the crowds and have a lot of time to absorb it all.  We walked to the Trevi fountain for our coin toss and pictures.  We had time to go to the bookshop and look around.  The bus makes a comfort stop coming and going.
