  1. I am a bit concerned about a Jewel review that included the cabin we are staying in for our cruise. Apparently, this is a new cabin added during dry dock and I have scoured the web to find more information on it. But the only review I found (which is on cruise critic) states the noise in the room was unbearable and sounds like a whirlpool draining. The reviewer said they went to customer service and the problem was fixed, but they did not say how.

Long story short, does anyone else have any information about this cabin? And what are common fixes for unbearable noise issues for cabins?

  2. Do you ride horses a lot? If so, fine and dandy...find a horse riding thing! If you never do...then rethink that. You will end up with a VERY sore crotch and legs...not a great way to spend a vacation. I speak from experience. We went horseback riding on our HONEYMOON....HUGE MISTAKE! HUGE....ouch.

We have never ridden horses and watching the videos where they were just traveling slow through areas ... well ... that did not seem to look that fun. I did manage to convince my wife not to go that route. I did not think about the soreness and now that I do, I think it sounds even worse. :o

I think we narrowed it down so far. And thank you so much for all your information and advice.

Here's the plan in its current state (seems like a good plan, but I also could be completely wrong ):

St. Thomas/St. John: We plan on taking the cruise ship excursion to Truck Bay which apparently seems like a must see beach. I have been reading reviews of Island Girl Charters and they seem well received. The charter leaves straight from the port to Trunk Bay and we can relax and enjoy the view all the way there instead of having to sit in a taxi, wait for ferrys, etc. Plus I would think this would be the port where I would want the ship to wait if we had any hiccups on the way back from St. John.

St Kitts: A day at Cockleshell Beach and the Reggae Beach Bar sounds great. (Thank you, Bob)

Antigua: I want to snorkle, she wants to kayak and we both still want to see a beach, so we will be trying the Antigua Kayak, Snorkel and Beach excursion that I keep seeing advertised with good reviews.

St. Lucia: Cosol Tours. When you have comments like "Best Tour in 30 years of cruising!", "Do Not Miss!" and "Best Tour Ever!" to name a few PLUS marked number one tour on Tripadvisor with 5 stars and over 1900 reviews ... well ... you certainly have my attention. I looked at the lists of things on the tour like waterfalls, volcano, history, plantation, mud baths, a beach visit, snorkling, FOOD and I question what else I could ask for? Count me in.

And finally, Barbados: The Boatyard. Seems inexpensive, seems beautiful, seems highly recommended, so we will jump in with both feet into this opportunity.

We decided that since we could not decide which stops to narrow down to beach ports, we would include a beach (in some way) into EVERY port that we visit.

  3. We finally decided on our next cruise which will be Jewel of the Seas to the Southern Caribbean to include stops at St. Thomas/St. John, St. Kitts, Antigua, St. Lucia, and Barbados.

I have been plunging into my research of each of these islands and the choices of excursions and beaches are mind blowing. It's becoming nerve racking trying to pick from everything for a 8 hour stop. I've dived into the TripAdvisor pages for each island and perused the threads in the Cruise Critic Ports of Call forums.

My wife and I have narrowed it down to do three beach days and two excursions. One excursion would be horseback riding since neither of us have done this (she was excited after watching a few YouTube videos) and then a kayaking/snorking excursion at another stop.

The videos about each island rave about their beaches and many have the horseback and kayaking/scuba excursions we are looking for, so I am looking for advice from fellow cruise addicts out there to how best divide our time between islands.

  4. Thank you so much for this wonderful tour of the Oasis of the Seas. We board in a few weeks and I was a little nervous because she is so big and has so much to offer, but your posts have helped so much. I think I will actually feel like I am returning instead of boarding for the first time.

Wow, what a great comment. Thank you so much.

I do remember our first cruise on Liberty of the Seas (I have a review on that one too which while before Liberty's drydock is still entertaining, if I do say so myself). I remember stepping on board and having no idea where to go and what to do. We were highly confused about where to go and just kept following crowds up stairs and through corridors having no clue to what we where doing before finally landing at the Windjammer and spending a half hour just trying to find a seat.

  5. Did you say which cabin you were in? If you did, I missed it and I'd be interested in knowing the location and what you thoughts were on the cabin, the location, and the noise level around you. I loved your review. I have read many and yours is undoubtedly one of the most informative I've seen. Thanks for the time and effort you put into it.

First of all, I want to thank everyone for those kind comments and continued support for this thread. I really appriciate it.

Regarding the room we were in, I believe it was deck 7 port side since we were one deck up from the spa and one deck lower than Central Park. On the Liberty, we had a room that was right in the middle of the ship and going anywhere required a loooooooong walk to either side's stairs and elevators. This was something we got tired of very quickly. So this time, we booked a cabin that was as close to the stairs and elevators as we could. If I remember correctly, the cabin was 7168. It really worked out well. We were literally about 10 paces from the elevators and stairs and we loved it. From now on, we will be seeking cabins like this for all future cruises.

As for noise and all that, I did think noise might be a issue with people coming and going from their cablins and being so close to stairs and elevators, but it was no different that our balcony cabin on Liberty. We did not notice any noise problems or anything to keep us awake at night. And the location was the perfect height for us to enjoy watching the ship coming and going from the ports.

  6. I dare say that this class of ship has something for everyone. My wife and I are in our 40s and would not hesitate to sail this ship again. As for teens, I have heard the teen program is fantastic along with so many activities such as mini golf, rock climbing, basketball court, wave riders, arcade games, etc. as for older folks, I cannot speak completely for that age group, but there is plenty of excellent live music (loved the live jazz), fantastic shows, trivia games and plenty of wonderful places to kick back and relax.

  7. The one and only time my wife and I experienced this was in Giovanni's Table on the Oasis. It was at the very end of the meal and everything was great so far. I was about to give the waiter a thoughtful tip in cash for great service, then he sprang this survey speech on us and it went from a fine dining to a swift kick in the nuts. He took the tip without much reaction but continued on how giving the highest ratings was vital. We walked out a bit dazed and confused on what actually happened and it was certainly uncomfortable.

Never had a problem with this eating in the Windjammer which could be one of the many reasons we prefer to eat there.

  8. Fizzlewicket, did you ever find your passport or did you get another one?

Read this review over again today. More interesting tips to add to my spreadsheet. I leave in September & March.

A few weeks after we got back, while we were finished unpacking all the boxes from the move, we came across small plastic box of toiletries sitting by its lonesome next to our bedroom door. It literally only took a second to find the passport sitting in there. In our scouring of the house during the day we were suppose to leave for the cruise, we never thought it would be with a box of bathroom supplies, but yet there it was and we still have no idea how it may have gotten there.

In other news, we finally decided on our next cruise. We are traveling on the Adventure of the Seas to the Southern Caribbean on 20 Jan 2018. This will be our 25th Anniversary cruise. As of today, it's 543 days away which feels like a lifetime. She should be interesting to see after her dry dock this year.

  9. Thank you very much. I really appreciate the continued positive feedback.

Looking back there are plenty of spelling errors and corrections I should have made, but the posts are locked out after only a short time.

After reading a lions share of reviews, I learned the hard way with my Liberty and now this Oasis tour/review that these require a lot of time and effort to create. (I would like to blame Gambee (in a good way) who's Allure review started my interest in cruising and also my interest in documenting my cruises.) But all in all, I believe they provide a excellent learning opportunity for others and it is just plain fun to share the cruise experience with people who love cruising.

Now, the planning begins for our 25th anniversary cruise in 2 years ... I'm thinking southern this time.

  10. Starbucks: Yes, you can use your Starbucks card to pay for items and drinks there.

Cafe Promenade: Food and regular coffee is complimentary. Specialty coffees are for fee.

Solarium Bistro: Breakfast and lunch are complimentary. For dinner, it turns into a for fee restaurant.

Sabor: This is a Al A Cart restaurant so there is no cover charge. You will pay for your meal after you eat there.

MyTime dining will be at the American Icon Grill on deck 3.

Johnny Rockets offers a complimentary breakfast, but lunch and dinner are for fee.

    Tapas is for fee.

The age restriction of the solarium is 16.

And finally, thank you for the wonderful compliment and enjoying the review.

  11. Thanks for the comprehensive ship tour! I board Allure soon and I'm getting very excited!

How much were mixed drinks on the ship? I know you said on Liberty you bought a package, but how about this time?

Since my wife did not drink much on the Liberty, we did not get the drink package this time. We limited drinks to around 5 for the entire cruise and she did not even get that many. She was very satisfied with just the soda package and Starbucks coffees. I honestly did not keep track of the cost of the drinks, but more of the overall on board credit in general.

  12. Thanks so much for such a great review of this ship and itinerary.

Can you tell me about the meals in the costal kitchen..did you have breakfast ,lunch or dinner there?

    Can't wait till August,

    Thanks again,

    Carol

Though I was curious about this and did find some lunch and dinner example menus for Coastal Kitchen on the beyond ships website.
